Betta Flaring when Room Lights Turned Off

We just got a new betta today and we (our family) really like him. With the aquarium light on (Fluval Spec V), I turned the room lights off thinking I would be able to see him better. He started seeing his reflection and flaring in every direction. I don't want to leave the lights in that room on all the time, but I don't want him flaring all the time either. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Is this during the day or at night? If it’s at night then that’s normal for the reflection to appear and for me having the light on at night or turning the tank lights off is a small price to pay to not stress your fish out.

Is it a room you usually have the lights on in the daytime?
My betta is in my room, and he does the same thing sometimes, but it's not a problem for me, since I have bright windows so the light is off most of the time anyway.
He might also just be stressed out from the new tank, and could settle down soon.

Thanks for the help I agree that turning off the light is a small price to pay. This being my first betta, I had never seen one flare before. After I figured out what it was, it scared me—for his sake.

It is a room where the lights are usually on in the daytime and it also has quite a bit of light (indirect) in the morning and afternoon. I appreciate your help and I'm going to try adjusting the timer on the aquarium light, so that it's only on when there is natural light or artificial light filling the whole room. Thanks

Yeah!
When my betta flared for the first time I was super scared that he was gonna hurt himself!
If never seen it before, I thought flaring was just spreading out their fins, but when he did the gill thing.. ops:

Mine does the same thing lol. I actually have a moonlight setting on my light which I sometimes put on for a while on the evening but I find my betta seems to prefer his tank darker, especially if we have the room lights low.
