Betta Fish Rescue - Crazy Idea!

So I have this crazy idea, I'm sure there are other people out there doing it but I haven't met anybody yet or at least in my area.

I was thinking to start a Betta fish "rescue" well not really a rescue because I don't have the space to keep tons of male bettas but I was thinking of going to stores like petco, petsmart etc.. and pick up at least 2 or 3 of the bettas that look sick or dying and try to rescue them and find them good homes once they are all good!

what do you guys think?

The majority will tell you not to rescue from stores cuz then they see it as a sale and buy more. Personally, coming from my viewpoint in working retail, I believe they will just get more anyways whenever they die off (I do this too but with flowers/plants) so I don't think it changes things either way honestly.

That being said. I rescue bettas (try to get most from overwhelmed breeders and owners instead of stores but I do that on occasion as well) and it's very rewarding. The hardest part is letting them go and not knowing how they're doing after they leave your care.

If you decide to rescue just be prepared for a lot of heartbreak and stock up on good meds for all possible cases of illnezz ahead of time so you're prepared.

If you need help don't hesitate to send me a message!

I'm in the 'get them from owners' boat vs buy from the store . From the store there is the chance or going to a bad home but also they could go to a bad home. Bettas that get rehomed are usually in a bad situation that can only get worse.

how would you get a betta from owners tho? lol I can only thing of doing an ad on craigslist but I doubt that would be very successful

You can put up flyers around town, check forums to see if anyone needs to rehome one, post an ad on Craigslist, possibly even the newspaper if you really wanted to. Also look at ads on Craigslist.

I'm sure there's other ways too. Possibly leave your info at a fish store in case anyone tries to hand one over to them and they can't actually take it in they can call you to get it.

You can also post an 'add' on here when you hit 50 posts.

I'd go during the dollar per gallon sale at Petco and buy a bunch of 10 gallons. I'd divide half of them, for guaranteed healthy bettas, and the ones that are sick can go alone.

I'm totally doing this when I move out

Omg yeah same! When I move out I'm going to upgrade my rescue betta tanks either that way or with individual 3-5 gallon tanks. Then get a huge tank for the females after they recover for while that wait for a permanent home.

And when I don't have rescues I can use the rack for breeding lol

yess!! I love the idea of a big tank for the female bettas to wait for adoption! I was thinking on breeding my male and female bettas but instead I think I'm just going to find bettas in need and rehome them

It can be super painful when they don't make it and when you have to sell them after what you went through with them. I ended up keeping all three of my rescues. Be ready to spend lots of money on meds though...
