Betta Fish, Okay With Snails? Basics?

Rojo the Betta fish
Rojo Was rescued on June 17th in this 1 gallon tank, no filter no heater. Thinking of upgrading him to a larger 5 gallon tank. That tank does have 2 Mystery Snails, do you guys think he would bother them? Also, I have an air stone in the 5 gallon. Will it bother the Betta? I could take it out if it is a disturbance. I could put something around the intake of the pump so his fins don't get caught.

Basics:
What is optimum type of food? how often?
Anything specific I should know?
Will be putting a heater in, and have glass gems as substrate in the 5 gallon tank.

I would suggest moving him to a cycled 5 gallon with a heater and instead of an air stone put a sponge filter so it helps keep your tank cycled

Would be careful if you decide to move him in with the Mysteries. More of their body sticks out than some other snails like nerites, meaning he might be able to bite off more than an antenna. My favorite food is HikarI Bio-Gold and frozen Freshwater Frenzy. I feed three pellets and a small piece of the frozen daily with a freeze dried bloodworm on Sunday, as a treat. I don't use an air pump in my tank, just a small filter. I've found the Bettaflo by Topfin to be a decent one. The intake is on the back of the filter so less chance of fins getting caught, also it's suited for five gallons.

I have a fully cycled 5 gallon going, where my two Mystery Snails currently live. It's an octagonal all encompassing tank with a built in filter (I chose to fill the inside nylons with carbon) I could take the current air stone out, put a heater in, move the snails into one of my 20 gallon tanks if Bettas tend to pick on them and put the Betta in there. He is currently in a little tank with no filtration..unless I can find a cheap pump for a 1 gallon. I don't want to stress him out but he doesn't have much room in there. HMMMM... decisions

Nerites and Bettas generally go well together from my experience. I have kept nerites with bettas for as long as I've had bettas, and never seen any issues with it.

I would honestly move the betta into the 5 you're cycling, and put the mystery snails into your 20 if you're concerned about your betta nipping. If your betta is fairly docile, then you don't need to worry but it is usually good to stay on the side of caution with Bettas

I had a betta I believed was purely docile, not aggressive in the slightest. So I purchased some ghost shrimp to help the tank out. Not the first time I've had them with that betta, figured nothing would happen. I come home from work to find a ghost shrimp in my betta's mouth, and another on the gravel with it's legs torn off. Bettas are unpredictable.

Yes, I think I will err on the side of caution with the snails! The food he came with is Tetra - Bettamin "Worm Shaped Bites" . Not sure how good they are for him.I may try out what you recommended Gala ! Thank you all <3 I will update when he is into the 5 gallon

Aliceisalive have you ever owned a Betta before? Could you maybe get a better picture of his tail? It looks like he either ripped it on the plastic plants or could be the start of fin rot. I would definitely move him to the 5G tank as a 1G is no where near large enough. I’ve had many Betta’s get along great with mystery snails some of them even ignore the snails. If you want you can move the mysteries but if it’s a trouble to do that then you can put the Betta in and just watch him for a bit to make sure he’s okay with them. Gala is right about them being more more likely to get hurt as more of their bodies are exposed so you don’t have to be careful. For food there are many options. You could do a simple diet with just 2 Betta pellets morning and night and then maybe a baby shrimp or brine shrimp treat every so often. You could do a in the middle diet like brine shrimp, frozen bloodworms, or baby shrimp. Or you can do an “advanced” diet of HikarI Betta pellets or bites (can’t remember name) and then frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. There is honestly so many diets to choose from as long as you stay away from freeze dried bloodworms and flakes you should be good. Betta’s don't like a heavy water flow so a sponge filter is best or you can just put a DIY filter buffer on an HOB filter. I like HOB filters with a buffer better (just a personal preference). With male Betta’s you have to watch for fin damage like fin rot or fin biting or if he tears it, it can cause bacterial growth causing fin rot or it can grow a fungus. And never ever ever ever use plastic plants for Betta’s or ANYTHING with tea tree oil in it. Plastic plants will rip his fins and tea tree oil can kill him because he’s a labyrinth fish. Silk or live plants are best. Also make sure the decorations/ornaments can’t tear fins either.

My Betta (6 singles in separate tanks) have always had at least one snail in the tank with them. Many times I have seen the Betta just swim up to the snail and appear to be 'sniffing' it. The Betta will swim away and come back over and over again and put it's nose right up to the snail. Mostly, the snails are Mystery snails, but I do have a few Nerites. I don't think any of the snails have ever been harmed by the Betta fish.
As far as food goes, they get a variety of foods including OmegaOne pellets, Spirulina, and Bug Bites for small fish. Occasionally Tubiflex or Bloodworm for treat.
