Betta Fish Fins Frayed, Not Getting Better

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and I made an account to ask a question about my fish because he does not seem to be getting better! Here's the story:
My betta is a veil tail named Bloo. I got him from Petco at around the end of February. He's in a 5 gallon tank with a heater and the temperature is consistently around 78 degrees. Right after getting him his fins grew quickly and looked great.
He has a few live plants, most are from betta bulbs and one was bought already grown from petco, and he has a cute little ceramic vase/aquarium decoration that he likes to hide in (there are no sharp edges or anything that could hurt him on it) About a month after getting him, I also got a small bubbler/filter that is supposed to be for a 3 gallon tank. Around the same time I also got a snail. This is when I noticed problems starting. His tail began to fray as if he had fin rot, but he was still his happy and energetic self (and he always had a bubble nest in the tank since I got him). I got melafix and dosed him with that for a week and then did a water change but if fins seemed the same. It has not been about three months and his fins even seem to be getting worse. Around April or May he stopped blowing his bubble nests but still seems energetic. I've been doing frequent water changes and checking his water and everything seems fine with the water. So I'm not sure what is wrong. I recently took the snail out and put it in a different tank (in case he was stressing Bloo out), but Bloo's fins seem to be getting worse if anything.
I just tested his water and here are the results:
Nitrates: 0-20 ppm
Nitrites: 0 ppm
Hardness: 0 - 25 ppm
Chlorine: 0 ppm
Alkalinity: 0 ppm
pH: 6.2-6.8

I plan on doing a 50% water change today. I'm sorry this post is so long but I wanted you guys to have all the information. Please help!
I'll also attach some pictures of his fins currently.

Do you have a way to test ammonia and nitrites? Honestly his fins look healthy, no tattered edges, no grey or black (signs of fin rot) and you said he's energetic as ever.

My test does test nitrites but no I do not have an ammonia test

If you're doing water changes like you should and your test results are in the green and you're sure there's nothing for him to snag his fins on, I'd say don't worry about it. Bettas don't build bubble nests all the time, and based on the pics I see his fins have possibly split a few times but they are healthy and show no signs of infection.

Oh really? That's good news then. Do you think his fins will heal over time though? It just worries me seeing them like that when they were so full and pretty before. They were somewhat frayed and broken when I got him from petco but within the first week they were healed.

I agree with Fahn, I think your betta looks very healthy. Do you have pictures of him before his fins frayed? To me, it looks like normal, healthy fin growth because all of the rays are even, smooth, and come to a nice point.

Based on the pics your betta has matured considerably, you have nothing to worry about. He looks quite healthy to me.

I would watch out with Melafix.

Dosing a full or overdose of it to a betta can kill them.

If you continue to use Melafix, do it in lesser dosages.

Actually, with a betta or gourami, I would recommend against using Melafix all together.

Yes I actually heard about that and that's why I stopped using it.

I was going to say you may have a veiltail with some crowntail genes! But it appears from old photos he is just a regular veiltail. When fins heal it doesn't always heal as they once were.... Ive seen some interesting healed fins.

Your fish certainly looks great, do you have any sharp objects in the tank? If so that could catch on your finned friends fins and rip them up. You could try Melafix, but Idk if that would work as they are frayed, it is not fin rot. Your fish's fins just may have healed over, so they may be like that now.

There is nothing that I know of in the tank that would rip his fins, everything is smooth. There did used to be a plastic leaf thing I had in there that might have been a little sharp at the tip but it was still rounded, and he really never went near it, but I did take it out a while ago just in case that was ripping them. Maybe they frayed earlier for some reason and healed like this like everyone says, so that's okay, I don't mind his fins being like that as long as he's healthy. Thanks everyone!
