I know the whole idea of recessive and dominant traits as far as mixing long fin types but I have yet to know if plakat is dominant/recessive over long finned varieties (HM in this case). Not too important right now, I figure I'd find out soon enough as my fry grow out but I would like to know before hand what to expect.

General info, mom is a copper HM. Dad is a non HM plakat but he should carry the HM gene as well as double tail (grandpa is a double tail plakat, grandma is a normal plakat). Not concerned with color at this point, just fin types and lengths.

in my experience the plakat is dominant over most other than the viel which you usually get around a mix of the two. HM also appears to be recessive to a non.

Long fins are generally dominant across the board.
DT is recessive requiring two copies of the gene to express, unless your female has it recessive you will have none of these.
Since neither fish is veil you will get a range of super delta to hm with a mix of short, medium, and long finned.
For bettas sometimes the fin length genes are co-dominant with a weird expression - you will get long fins, medium fins (makes the fish look a little weird because the dorsal and analfins normally look longer while the caudal isn't as long), and short fins.

Sounds like a little bit of everything then, which is nice IMO. The fry are free swimming as of today so should be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Thought I’d give a long over due update on the genetic experiment. As a first time dad, only 10 fry made it to adulthood. There wasn’t many eggs to begin with so that’s ok.

Here’s mom and dad for comparison.

I ended up with one male plakat.

Two males that look like this, delta tails it would seem.

1 bland natural colored female I didn’t bother adding pics of. 2 white females, 1 blue and then 2 interesting females.
