Betta Cloudy Eye After 2 Week Treatment

I had a female betta who got some popeye and cloudy eye after getting her from my LFS. I started dosing her with Kanaplex in my 10 gallon QT. After the 1st treatment her popeye was gone and has stayed gone, but her eyes are still slightly cloudy. She is on week 2 of Kanaplex dosing (after the first week I removed the first dose with carbon and started another round of meds) and I just wasn't sure if anyone had any clue what was going on and why it is taking so long to get rid of. Thanks!

Pictures would be highly appreciated. Sounds like your betta has cataract problems.

Cloudiness of the eye can come along with Popeye due to damage to the cornea. Damage to the cornea will heal with clean water and a good diet but it may take weeks or months for it to heal up.

True, but bettas also are easliy prone to cataract problems when they are of old age, especially when they get a disease just like that.

The more likely scenario is that the popeye gave way for opportunistic bacteria which also damaged the cornea. It could also be cataracts but petstores usually won't have very very old bettas. Cataracts are irreversible so if it didn't clear up a little after the popeye was gone then it is probably cataracts. Only time will tell. :/

Thanks for the help! Do you think I'd have to worry about anything spreading if I move her back into the main community tank? I just don't know how long to keep her in QT at this point if it is cataracts, which is sounding more like the case.

cataracts don't spread to other ish, only to the other eye of the fish sometimes, but never to an other fish.

For bacterial Popeye, it isn't contagious and if the other fish has a healthy immune system, they should be fine.

my betta recently got cloudy eyes (not from popeye though) while I was on vacation. his water parameters were perfect. I did a 50% water change and then a 30% water change a few days later. I put a few small indian almond leaves in the tank and soaked his frozen food in freshly chopped garlic. 4 days of doing this and his eyes have cleared up.

when came home fron a short vacation, I had fin ro and some of the fish had cataracts, the survivors lost the fin rot and the cataracts at about the same time. they never had cataracts ever again.
