Betta Breeding Journey Thread

I decided that I would make this my official betta breeding thread for advice and updates. I have 3 1/2 pairs as of now, and the last female will be purchased next week. The pairs I have, are listed below:
-Male & Female black samurai HMPK
-Male & Female cellophane HMPK
-Female koi VT & Male Samurai koi HMPK
-Male candy nemo HMPK (female coming soon)
I have only one breeding tank setup already for the samurai pair, while the others continue to condition.
In my journey, I have come to recognize that betta breeding fully requires patience, time, and money.

I plan to breed the cellophane pair, and the samurai pair as soon as the tanks settle. They are the only ready-to-go pairs. I set up a 10 gallon for the cellos since they are bigger, and a 5 1/2 gallon for the samurais...they are actually quite small, shockingly.
The tanks are still cycling, but so far so good. Cello and samurai females are attempting to approach their males with the dominates posture, which is a really good sign!
I won't be keeping the large filter in the 10 gallon due to it's heavy flow. It's just supposed to help the cycle (filter was cycled before added).
Can't wait! But I will...I don't want to rush things!
Tanks consist of live plants, driftwood, IAL, bio balls, sand, heaters, sponge filters of a sort, and snails.
What may have caused the water to get so nasty? If it doesn't clear up, is it still safe to add in my fish?

The Samuria are very nice looking fish.
When I bred my aliens I used bare bottom tanks with live plants and wood.
It is how I bred all the fish I enjoyed.
Good luck!
