Betta and Dwarf Gourami??

I have a 50G tank with some mollies, couple of cories, an algae eater, 3 guppies and a dwarf gourami. Would really like to add a betta, but not sure how bettas do with dwarf gouramis. Will they fight since they are of the same species? Also, on that Melafix warning, dwarf gouramis are labyrinth fish I think....does that apply to them?

Yes the Melafix and Pimafix warnings apply equally to the Gouramis and Bettas and any of the other fish listed in the post in the illness section. (all labyrinth organ fish and pencilfish)

No the Betta cannot go into the tank with a Gourami. They will have the same reaction as if they were challenged by another betta or gourami, respectfully. We have had members lose either their gourami or their betta by trying this combination. You may end up with a couple of very mild mannered fish and it would not bother but then again you may end up with a couple fighters. Is it worth the risk?

Guppies are not recommended with Bettas either as they are fin nippers.

Thank you Rose for all the info. Glad I asked. I think Mr. Betta will go into our 10G when we are ready to buy him. The tank is almost cycled . Who would be good tank mates for him?

Guppies are not fin nippers. They aren't supposed to be with bettas because their fins look similar and so bettas attack and shred guppy's fins.

Sorry but I have had to post to people on the forum who had difficulty with the guppies also being on the aggressive. (nipping) They are also possible targets for the bettas with those long fins, but there has been aggression on both sides.
