I have used the Tetra10I in a 5 gallon tank Imo, it works well with a small bio-load.
Instead of the cartridges I used a filter sponge cut to fit. (doesn't matter what brand)

umm, okay anyways aqadvisor is a great place to ESTIMATE stocking level for beginners. check it out!

Do I just get sponge and cut it to fit were the cartridge goes? Can I put purigen in it?

Yup, just shove it in there. Filter floss works really well too. You want to make it all the water is filtered through the sponge or floss.

Can I put purigen in it?

I've never used it. So I really can't comment.
Do you use it along with other filter media or alone?

Would I just rinse the sponge in tank water during water changes? No other media? I can't put seachem matrix or purigen in it?

Is my stocking too much?

I put seachem matrix in those

How?

its just a hole where you put a cartridge of media right? Skip the cartridge and put those little rocks (SeaCheam Matrix) inside the hole instead. Much more surface area for BB to grow on.

Oh would I be able to put purigen in there to? Also, could I use the whisper 10I and the default one?

And can a heater be next to a filter?

Peacefantasy
  • #94
You should keep the heater by the filter. It will help keep the water temp constant

You would have to get a very small specialized bag that you would customized to fit inside of the there in order to put the tiny grains of purigen inside of. Not sure it's very practical. I think having seachem Matrix as a good biological media is the best option for little filters like these.

Ok so should I just matrix at the bottom then can I shove a aquarium sponge on top of it? Whats the difference between matrix and matrix carbon?

Just use regular matrix

Here's mine

So you don't put a sponge, or cartridge in? Is the whisper 10I too strong for a betta, in a 5 gallon?

I think it should be fine for that size tank. What I showed was my very small internal filter for my 1 gallon tank. I do not use any sponge or cartridge. I just use straight seachem Matrix. Fill it with as many tiny rocks of seachem Matrix as you can.

Hmmmmm! So I should just fill it up with Seachem matrix, could I like cut a sponge to size then cut it to be smaller, then fill in the empty space with matrix rocks? ALSO, What about malaysion trumpet snails, could I have a few in the tank to stir sand?

  • #101
Don't forget that you have to cycle the media first before you put a fish inside of the tank

FishBruh12
  • #102
I know. Could I put matrix on the bottom, then sponge, then more matrix on top?

cheesepuff
  • #103
You could. I would just stick with matrix (it's really good stuff), but there's no reason why you couldn't.

Lol okay! Do you think the aqueon 10w preset heater would work? What other heaters would work, and what plants do Betta's like

cheesepuff
  • #105
Not sure about the heater, but I will say this about plants - NOTHING SHARP OR POINTY!

their fins are delicate.

Also, mts should be fine in the tank with the betta

FishBruh12
  • #106
Lol I'm planning on have live plants, how many MTS? Who should I introduce to the tank first after cycling?

cheesepuff
  • #107
Actually, I just looked up that heater. Don't bother with it. It does not function like you think it does. It only has an emergency cut off should the tank water get too hot. If that emergency cut off gets tripped, than the entire product will no longer function. Instead, I recommend if you want a micro heater, getting the one from Top Fin.

Cant seem to find that online? What about the slI'm round ones? How many MTS

EDIT: Just found it

There are pointy and sharp live plants. So long as you stay away from those, you should be good. MTS multiply very quickly. If it's a small tank just one or two in my opinion would be enough because eventually they'll multiply. You could introduce them both of the same time if you want. Most of the time I wouldn't recommend putting a snail with a betta because bettas need soft water while snails need hard water, but MTS are so resilient that I think you could probably get away with soft water and he would be fine.

I've only ever had plastic plants with my betta. But definitely get him a betta hammock. They love to lay down on it near the surface of the water like they do in the wild. It'll be a really nice little spot for him to chill, and it's very inexpensive to get.

  • #112
Ive read things about rust poisoning from them?

cheesepuff
  • #113
They do have a small metal rod in them to keep it stiff. I've had mine for well over a year now and I can't say that any fish that has been in contact with a betta hammock has ever suffered any ill effects. It's embedded inside of plastic, so long as you don't tear it I don't think the metal part actually gets wet

Ok! Thank you!

  • #115
Happy to help! That being said, don't forget to watch out for manufacturer defects. The metal should be encased in all the plastic, but if that's not what you see, swap it out for a different one at the store.

So ima just recap,

Tetra Whisper 10i- Sponge, Matrix
Stocking (after cycling)
Betta
3 ghost shrimp
2 nerite snails
2 MTS

Plants- amazon sword, anachris, java fern, anubias

cheesepuff
  • #117
I do have some concerns, as the nirite snails are going to require hard water, while the betta requires soft water

FishBruh12
  • #118
What would happen?

clk89
  • #119
The betta will be fine in harder water. I have hard water, fish usually get use to hard water. If the water is too soft for the nerite snails then put in cuttlebone for extra calcium for them to chew on. Just plop it right into the tank.
