Best way to switch to new tank in same location

Hello,

I want to place a new tank in the same place I have my current tank, but I don't have another tank to keep my fish in while I do the switch.
What would be the best way to make the switch under these conditions?

I was thinking of taking out water from the current tank (temporarily into a bucket with fish), moving it somewhere temporarily, filling it up again, setting up the new tank, and then finally moving the fish once the new tank has cycled. Seems logical to me, but please let me know if I shouldn't do it this way, or if there are any better methods.

Any other advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Is it a second tank or new tank?

It will be a new tank, replacing my current/only tank.

Are you using the same stuff from that tank?

The filter and some of the hardscape, but will be changing the substrate.

Hey,

keep the filter running on a bucket with old tank water while setting up the new tank and also put the hardscape you're gonna reuse in the bucket.
That way the filter is completely cycled and the hardscape adds a ton to the useful bacteria. :)

With a tiny bit of luck, the tank will basically be insta-cycled.
