Best veggies for BN pleco?

jkkgron2
  • #1
As some of you know, I have a BN pleco along with
3x angels
4x cories
1x Krib
2x guppies
4x head and tail light tetras
1x platy
I am planning on feeding some cucumber, zucchinI and spinach but I’m wondering, are these good options? Do I have to do anything special to prepare them? If they are bad options, what do you guys recommend? Thanks!

Cucumber, zucchini, and spinach are all good options for BN plecos. I don't boil them (cause I am a lazy person). Instead, I use a veggie clip to get the vegetables in place without floating.

Thanks! Will it just sink if I don’t clip it?? Also, no boiling veggies for me (too lazy ).

No, it'll float.

No, it'll float.
All of them? If I soaked them for about an hour then would they sink or do they just keep on floating?

I also have one of those telescopic magnetic retrieval wands to get the fork back in the morning because, yes, I am that lazy.

I just put mine on a plate in thw microwave for 30 seconds.

I clamp zuch or pumpkin in a bulldog clip and pitch it in. Spinach I clamp in a plastic hair clip and then just stick that in old heater suction cup clips. Sometimes spinach goes in a bulldog clip if I do not feel like digging a hair clip out of the tank.
Spinach is straight out of the bag. Pumpkin is just sliced up. Zuch is blanched because that is what I was originally told to do and because when I tried without that it took them a while to start eating it.
None of my plecos liked sweet potato or carrots. They also turned their noses up at canned salt free green beans. They may have eaten some of the peas I peeled but maybe they didn't, not a lot of interest in them and they were still drifting around later.
Currently testing Brussels Sprout blanched. Some occasional nibbling but it loses out to the spinach in the tank. This is good as Brussels Sprouts are expensive.
Other than that it is shrimp pellets and massivore.

Plecos may take some experimentation to find what yours like. Lots of people tell me their plecos are gaga for green beans but mine will not touch them.
I'm still on the quest to find something that makes my plecos go crazy.

Thanks, I know I need to add 3+ more but I don’t have a quarantine set up yet due to the fact I forgot to order a heater and I don’t want to risk disease because my angel just got HITH so I’m already gonna dose the tank w/ meds and I don’t want to have to do it again after I’m done treating this.

What are the best vegetables to feed bristlenose plecos?

I've heard of a lot of options. I've only tried zucchini and cucumber. My Plecos seem to prefer the cucumber.

Spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, cucumber, peas, carrots, green beans, zucchini, bell peppers, celery and carrots.

Mine feast on zucchini. They will tolerate yellow zucchini but much prefer the green. The adults go for the skin first. The fry prefer the meat so I remove the skin for them. I have offered broccoli but they don't seem to like it. The fry will go for bell peppers but the adults seem to ignore it.

All of the above. If feeding broccoli, I prefer the thick stems rather than the flowery part of it. Split them longitudinally and he will start from end, eat away towards the other. The shells will also be eaten later, but I take them out after a while. Don’t remember seeing on the list, but Green peas will work, too. Almost any vegetable will work, even some fruits, but I wouldnt stick to one; variety is better. I prefer steaming veggies rather than boiling, they stay intact (no mushy stuff) and arguably more nutritious. Driftwood is very good; they will chew on it. (Not staple, but think like supplements.)

You can add them raw too!

Yes, of course.

In my case, raw stuff lingers for a long time, especially if they are hard (carrots) and float (most do). I see a few bites here and there on them and eventually take them out after a few days. Ligthly steamed/boiled, it goes straight to the bottom, and a BN is on it chewing away in no time.

When I have competitors (livebearers), it helps; the BN gets food quickly and the livebearers can also eat the soft stuff. I am not saying raw is bad, just my own experience. Raw is great if it is working for you.

I have Amanos and SAE that help also.

I would try blanched Zucchini next. Most seem to like that.

Mine love cucumber. I weight it using a metal skewer. Didn’t like Swiss chard as much, but did eat it. I give them organic so there’s no residual toxins.

Hi all!
I wanted to start a thread to possibly help new pleco owners (like myself) decided what fruits and veggies are healthy for their plecos and that the plecos will like. I think the format for this should be something like this:
Food name:
How much your pleco liked it (out of 10):
How you prepared it:

If you think it should be done a different way, let me know and I'll edit the format. If you want to enter something, just copy the format and insert the information on the food. Thanks!

I feed mine zucchini and green beans
I microwave a couple of slices and then put it into cold water to cool it down and so the vegetables don't float up.
I feed mine 5 slices (4 plecos and 2 panda garra) as often as I can

Also is there some special food that might encourage them to breed? I got a pair of adult bp, they bred in the shop and I hope they will breed in my tank as well.

I give all my plecos Zucchini, Cucumber, Broccoli, Bell Peppers, Romaine lettuce, the tops of Celery, and Peas.

I use to either microwave them or boil them, but now I put them in there fresh and hold them down with skewers

Do you put the bell peppers in raw? Also, is the point of boiling just to make things sink or does it have a real reason behind it (ex: your fish will die if you don't boil the food*)? I have really only ever fed zucchini which I stab with a sword fork and then toss to the bottom of the sea tank.
*This statement was made up and isn't true
