I use AquaClear and Marineland HOB’s but with 5 tanks going, they get expensive. Anyone have luck with the less expensive brands? Due to space, canisters are not an option for me. Appreciate any and all advice.

You can always run sponge filters. You wouldn't be able to run any gfo or carbon but many successful hobbyists on youtube use sponge filters to keep and breed fish

I guess it depends on the tank size. Marineland Penguin 350 filters can be found for $35 or less.

I actually bought a Penguin 200. It’s for a 20 long. Found one for $18.

Aqueon QuietFlow is a pretty good deal. You can modify the filter to accept bio media and it self primes. It doesn't have adjustable flow though.
