We are upgrading our tank and I am wondering if you prefer gravel to sand for health/cleaning purposes. Which is better for Goldie's?

If i recall correctly, I think bare bottom is actually preferred for goldies.

I would use pool filter sand, 50 lbs for $6 or so at Home Depot.

I always heard that sand wasn't great for goldies because they can sometimes eat it thinking it's food. I've never had goldfish myself though.

Bare bottom or gravel/rocks for goldfish. If you go bare-bottom, you can make it look really cool by buying small terra cotta pots and fill them with substrate and plants. Makes for a very modern and comtemporary look.
