    Hi all

I have just bought 6 large slate rocks for my 125g tank. I want to know if i can use River washed sand from local builders yard? I know i will have to clean it well, but will it be ok for the fish?

    Thanks

African Cichlids like to dig around in the substrate. I would say as long as it is fine enough for them to get into their mouths and move around. It sounds like it will be great as long as you rinse it well. I am not an expert, but I have about 20 African Cichlids and 6 South American Cichlids.

A fine sand is a great choice for using in an African Cichlids tank. My only concern with river sand would be what might be living in it. I would think that during your cleaning process you would want to use some boiling hot water to be sure you kill off any small animals or insects that might be living in it. Another thing you could do is put it in the oven heated to 350 degrees for a half hour or so which would kill off what might be there.

Very nice looking tank. You should have a good time setting it up.
