Best Plants To Have On Rocks

Hi! I’m setting up a 3.5 gallon tanks and I was wondering what you plants I could use in between all of my rocks. I want them to be relatively small. I’ve been seeing a lot of things about Anubias nana, but I don’t like the way it looks. The tank feels like a desert, so I want something kind of like crypt wendtii, except that it wouldn’t need planted in substrate. Thanks!

Have you considered java fern? Java fern can get fairly large, but if you're running a lower tech tank, with low light and balanced (not excess) nutrient levels, I would think they would do okay for awhile before you had to rehome them. The neat thing about those too is they propagate easily.

I was considering them, but I’ve had them in every setup I’ve ever had and I want to try something new

Bolbitis
Bucephlandra
Piptospatha
Homalomena
Hygrophila Pinnatifida
And there are some java ferns that are different from your typical chain store java fern. Thor's hammer for example.
All plants that are a bit less common and will do well anchored to hardscape.
Most (aquatic) mosses would work as well.

Nice choice.
Beautiful plants, small, slow growers. Really nice for a nano tank.
The only one that I am aware of that you should possibly avoid is Bucephlandra 'skeleton king' as many have issues growing it submerged. Others should do just fine even in low tech tanks.

I ended up buying one Bucephalandra mini phantom type II from Etsy.
