Best method to safely clean slate for aquarium

HI guys,

I know this has been talked about extensively but what are your opinions on the best way to clean/sterilize slate rocks from a local landscaping yard. Any tips or tricks. Heard some people boil, use bleach is that safe to do so?

Just rub it off in a bucket of clean water. I use my 5 gal. water change bucket to clean decor.

interesting, do you think pouring boiling water over them would be sufficient?

worried that they might explode and not sure if I have a pot big enough to boil

 

I would be careful just dumping boiling water on them they may crack. Slow boil, let it boil for 10mins.

I have used heavily diluted bleach 1:30 in a 5 gallon bucket to clean rocks. Then wash/scrub under clean water until you can’t smell bleach

 

I have over 200 lbs. Of rock in my tanks, purchased from a local rock yard.
Rinsing the rocks off with water or dunking them in a WC bucket worked out just fine.

Thanks for the tips, I noticed a couple of the rocks have discolouration resembling rust. Is that still safe to use? I attached a photo below.

 

That looks to be a break in the rock, exposing the interior mineral & color.
