I'm currently in the works of building a tank myself, but i'm not sure what to make the lid out of, and I've heard of people using lexan, acrylic, poly-carbonate, glass, etc depending on the wavelengths of light that can pass through the material. I'm planning on making cut outs for the filter and heater and have a Finnex light sitting above it.

So what would be the best option to make the lid out of?

I've used glass (if you're in the US, Lowe's will cut it for you for free, though not the cut outs for the equipment) and egg crate (I cut it myself, and you can easily make cut outs for equipment).

I go to Lowes and buy a screen kit for about 11 bucks and some 1/4 inch mesh screen. You can make your own screen top. Look on YouTube: there are instructional videos on how to do it.
