Best heater for 75 gallon

I have a Topfin 300 watt heater in my 75 gallon and I'm looking to replace it. I'm currently dealing with either ick or velvet in my tank and am trying to get my temp to at least 86 degrees. Since I've been watching my temp like a hawk I'm realizing what a bad heater I have. The temp flucuates way too much and can not keep the temp above 80 at night. (Our house is 68 at night and 70 during the day). I did not want to buy a second cheap heater from my local pet store but would rather spend them money on a well built and reliable one. Any suggestions?

You only really need a 200 watt heater for 75 gallons but I bet your heater is probably burning out or something. I think that any 200-300 watt adjustable heater would do fine. Good luck with your ick / velvet problem.

My apologies. I didn't realize that was an offensive word. It was just said in extreme frustration.

Ifpossible I tend to like to use 2 smaller heaters in a big tank instead of one larger. For instance, one of my heaters in the sump for my 125 gallon died last weekend, and the temperature started dropping. My second was able to keep it warm enough - in winter - for the fish to be fine, but if I'd only had 1 heater, they might have had losses in the tank.

Of course this is a 75, not a 125+55, so the sizes are a bit different. You could get away with 1 large heater, but I still feel better with redundancy.

Eheim makes good heaters. Some of the marineland ones are very good as well. I'd look at those two brands first for my heaters.

Ok, I think I'll go the double smaller heater route. What do you think for a 75 gallon? Two 125 watts?
