Best fish to add

I currently have a 20 gallon hex tank with live plants, a snail, a pleco and 8 rummy nose tetras. I have a 100w heater and I keep it around 78 degrees. My filter system is good for up to a 50 gallon tank. Looking for suggestions on what other fish I can add.

Can't help much with stocking, but what kind of pleco?

Sorry not sure. He is black with gray spots. Got him from my LFS.

Can you get a pic? If he's a common, he could get over a foot long and requires a much larger tank. If he's a bristlenose, he still creates a fairly large bioload and limits your options.

Tank mates for rummy nose tetras

I currently have a 20 gallon hex tank with live plants, a snail, a small pleco and 8 rummy nose tetras. I have a 100w heater and I keep the temp around 78 degrees. My filter is good for up to 50 gallon tank. I have had it running for about a week now and all is good. I want to add more fish but can't decide what would be best. Any suggestions?

What's the width of the tank?

Hex tanks are very difficult to stock due to their short horizontal swimming length. I'm afraid what you have now is likely too much for this tank.

Welcome to Fishlore. Before we can help you, I have a few questions. First of all, are you cycled? If not, have a look at the nitrogen cycle article. Also, do you have test kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? Sorry if that seems like more questions than answers, but once we know some more info, we can help you out on the fish front

Welcome to Fishlore

I think we'll need to know the dimensions of the tank which has been asked in your other thread so without duplicating questions/answers, maybe one thread about your stocking would be best. jdhef

Can you attach a pic of your pleco? Depending on the species, it may need to be rehomed before adding more fish.

Yes I am cycled. My husband has 2 saltwater tanks so he has started this for me. He has an RO-DI filter unit so water is good. We did our first 30% water change yesterday and added bacteria supplement. He also added a bag of carbon to the filter system. The tank is 21 inches tall and there are six glass panels that are 9 inches wide each. The tank is approx 18 wide across. Not sure how to post pics but will try.

Anders247 might be able to ID the pleco and advise on stocking for that tank size.

Welcome to fishlore!
Looks like a bristlenose pleco, which will need a 20 gallon long minimum, some say 29 gallon min. Either way, too big for your size tank.

Thanks. Would have been nice if my LFS would not have suggested this guy.

No problem, I would tend not to listen to advice given by fish store employees as they don't give the best advice, and they're usually trying to make a sale.

I agree with Anders247 on the pleco being too big/store advice front. When you've homed him we can help you find a replacement
