Best filter for a Quarantine Tank?

HEy guys I was wondering for my 7.5 gallon (30 qt) sterilite container quarantine tank, what's the best filter I can run on it. I want the water quality to be awesome so the sick fish recover faster.

Should I do a Top Fin 10, AC 20, Tetra 3i, Tetra 10i, Aqueon QuietFlow 10, or Hydro Sponge 1?

 

The hydro sponge would be the best option. It both filters and oxygenates the water.

Plus, you can keep it in your main tank so that you have a fully cycled filter in case you ever need to set up a quarantine in short notice.

 

That's exactly what I do. Instead of an airline diffuser I have a sponge filter. Any time I need a QT, just move sponge filter and sick fish.

 

I have a question. If you treat sick fish in the quarantine tank with the spongefilter when you move the sponge back to main tank, will the sponge spread disease.

Thanks Ken. I know this is not filter related but how many watts should the heater I buy be. 25 or 50? The quarantine tank is a 30 qt (7.5 gallon) sterilite container.

If there's disease on the filter than it's likely the fish you just added to your main tank would also be diseased. Follow my logic?

 

The general rule for heat is 3-5 watts per gallon.

I agree. I use bags of biomax in HOBs for my quarantine tanks. The only time QT media makes it back into a show tank filter is after it's been washed and dried out. I never really move the media around though. I have snails in the tanks so when they are fish free I still feed them and the snails maintain the cycle. If I get several fish, then I will pull media from another tank to augment then QT filtration.

If I used sponges, like was suggested, then as soon as I moved the sponge filter to the QT I would set up another in the show tank, so that it will be prepped and ready to go for next time.

 

Yup sponges are great filters for QT, I too would not put it in the main tank even though it may be clean you never know.

as for a heater id say you can go with a 25 or a 50 I prefer getting the biggest heater I can fit in the tank this way it runs for smaller periods of time which I personally believe is better for the heater then a heater running for longer periods.
