What is the best species for a carpeted plant for my driftwood. I have 29 g planted with java ferns, amazon swords, dwarf grass and lobelias cardinalis.

Are you asking about carpeting a piece if driftwood? Most people use mosses for that. I'm a fan of christmas moss, java moss is also popular.

You could use the java fern, but the rest won't work since they're root feeders and can't get the nutrition they need from the driftwood, as it lacks minerals and they won't be able to root

Dwarf baby tears also won't work because it's a root feeder and too sensitive to root into driftwood

I want to carpet my drift wood. Going between java moss or Christmas moss ow willow moss. Or even dwarf baby tears.
DBT needs high light and CO2 injection, and while I've seen it draped over hardscape, it's very much a rooted plant.
Those mosses should all work, though my 2 cents is that java moss is less attractive than other mosses due to its tendency to have no particular structure in growth.

Christmas moss better than java moss?
I like the way Christmas looks better than java. Moss will never again be added to my tank though. I take out a golf ball size compressed every month. I keep neglecting to remove it all so it finds a way to carpet across some section of my tank. It's one of those things that do better when neglected it seems. I thought I got rid of it before I left for 9 months. Came back to a couple softball sized pieces I donated to my lfs.
