Best Betta Fish Tank For Single Betta Fish

Hello everyone, I’m looking to get a betta fish tank for a single large half moon male betta fish. Last year I got rid of my Fluval Flex 15g and 3 of my Aqueon Mini Bow’s. But now I’m wanting just a single betta fish but I need help picking out tank. I know most people on here say no less than five gallons for a single betta. But I was looking at the Fluval Spec III 2.6g for my betta, I was wondering how hard maintence is and cleaning the back chambers? I always had problems cleaning the back 3 chambers of my 15 gallon Fluval Flex. I just want something that looks nice isn’t too big and is easy to maintain and take care of. As I mentioned I did have 3 Aqueon Mini Bow’s last year, I had to make some alterations such as putting a sponge filter over the intake to slow the water flow for my bettas and I replaced the replaceable carbon filter pads with Seachem matrix and filter floss or a small thin sponge I can’t remember. And I’m not sure if I’ll do live plants or fake ones, if I do live plants it will be low light plants attached to driftwood or rock and moss balls if not I’ll just use fake plants. If any of you have suggestions on a betta tank that looks good and is easy to maintain please let me know, also I don’t care how much it cost. Thanks guys!!

From what I’ve read on here some people think a betta with very long fins can be okay in a 2.5 because they do not swim around as much. I have a dragon scale Betta and he swims around his whole 10 gallon all the time. It really depends. I think the fluval 2.6 looks good though.

Thanks! I think the spec looks very nice as well. I’m just worried about cleaning the back chambers. I had a terrible time cleaning the back 3 chambers of my Fluval Flex 15g, I could never get all the fish poop, plant matter, and debris completely out of the chambers. I definitely want something that’s easy to clean and maintain. But I don’t know much about the Fluval spec 2.6 other than it’s small and looks nice.

Sorry to be the bearer of this news but someone was going to say it eventually, I wouldn't say this tank is a good option for a betta. 2.6 is very small and this is a more vertical tank correct? The vertical build is not best for bettas, you would be much better off with a more stretched out horizontal style tank. I would say a tank like the UNS 45S is a better option, it is 17 in long by 11 in deep and 7 in high and 5 gallons. Though I am not saying that tank specifically as it is pricey, just a good example.

I got a TopFin “Premium” glass aquarium from Petsmart. 5 gallons and I removed the internal filter compartment with a little bit of effort and a blade. Replaced it with a mini HOB filter from Amazon and it works great for my single male betta. I have it on my nightstand. Dimensions are 14 in L x 9.5 in W x 9.5 in H (35.5cm x 24.1cm x 24.1cm). $70 and comes with a glass lid to keep your betta from jumping out. LED light is very bright though. I keep a thin cloth over to top to keep it dimmer for the betta and prevent algae

You could always save money and diy. 5 gallon tanks are cheap and available. Buy a sponge filter, they’re easy to clean or make your own filter and use a cheap light. It would cost much less than buying a kit since most are around 100$ anyways.

Hello Cole23!
I suggest you do a planted tank. A planted tank with a couple of snails is perfect, and because it has its own mini environment, cleaning (besides algae) is not needed as often as with fake plants. If you really want some fake plants, I suggest some velvet or softer plants. Plastic and sharper fake plants can cut a longfin betta. Bettas have a better chance in a 3.5 gallon and above, though I would recommend a five or more gallon instead. The "perfect" betta tank in my opinion consists of live plants, low light, sponge filter, snails, non-dyed sand or gravel, heater, and smooth rocks or caves. Here is a picture of my very first betta. I had not done enough research (rest in peace leonardo...), and I bought a "dangerous" setup with sharp plants, dyed gravel, strong current, no hiding places, no heat, and highlight. The next picture is blurry, but you can see the difference. The next one is "safer". Plus, living tanks have a more lively look to them. :emoji_blush:

I have some small tanks made by Penn Plax. I like the design of the curved glass. I have two 5 gallons and a 2.7 gallon (I don't know if they make that size any longer). They are a few years old, and are now designed differently, but they make good betta tanks. I use my own filters (I like hob filters) and lighting.

Here's a link, in case you want to take a look at them....

I’m a minimalist so the fancier tanks are not all that great when I can get the same outcome with a second hand tank. What can I say, I’m cheap!

For a long finned betta I think a sponge filter and a relatively shallow tank is a must. Their fins are a problem when it comes to swimming so they are easily torn even of they do not get snagged on something. This is likely one reason other countries that produce bettas keep them in rather small containers.

This tank is 5gals and just recently set up so not particularly good looking yet. Despite that, it is what I would do for a long finned betta. No heavy current, plants that will eventually provide resting places, a couple pieces of wood (one to hide the sponge filter), plenty of floating plants to provide a shaded look. Light is just a goose neck lamp with a “daylight” LED bulb (plants love it).

I’m currently using it to breed a few guppies and let a female betta recover from spawning, so yes technically over stocked, shame on me.

Such a beautiful setup! I can not wait till' I have saved up for a tank like that! Today I am selling six adult bettas to my local reptile store. I breed parakeets and crested geckos, so it's hard saving up for anything when I still have to pay for tons of food and essentials! All the prices went up on everyday pet items...
My tanks are planted, but only lightly with chunky unappealing gravel.

I really like my Fluval 15 bow front. It's really more like 11 gallons though due to back filtration taking up space. Perfect size for a fullmoon betta to really swim and show off!

I love my 6 gallon Ascent by Aqueon - aesthetically, it's very pleasing, longer and a bit narrow. I have it set up with some plants. It curently houses a betta who has a birthd defect ( bad curve) that I purchased as a baby
