beggining my nano-reef

I'm beginning a ten gallon nano-reef and I have everything ready but some live rock and the fish, so here is my question, do I need Bio-Spira to add the sand and the salt and begin heating it? I have heard that it is better to start the sand and the salt in the tank a few days before adding live rock and fish, the first fish I will likely add will be a small maroon clown fish, and a blue crab, no coral or anemones for three months, and I will add only one more Maroon Clown fish during the entire time and perhaps one of two more little fish that will stay little, thanks for any reply.

 

I can't help with the bio spira as I've never used it but it should say on the directions when & how to use it it.
Maroon clowns are too big for a 10 gallon, the female gets to around 6".
You could just get away with one common clown, they don't need anenomes in an aquarium as there are no predators
With marine tanks you can't stock as you would a freshwater, under stocking is best.

 

OK, I'll think about my stocking choices, but do I need to "condition" my water before I add live sand and add the salt to the water? My tap water is already dechlorinated.

 

Using tap water is not a good idea not just because of chlorine/chloramine but it contains nitrates, phosphates etc which will cause all sorts of problems, you really need to use Ro/DI water

 

I would strongly advise against adding fish than live rock, you will likely kill your clownfish. Set your tank up exactly how you want it, sand, LR, light, heater, ect. Buy a test kit, and wait for your tank too cycle. While you wait research what fish and corals you want. This is important because your stocking is going to be very limited in only a 10 gallon tank. Once your tank has "cycled" go ahead and buy clean up crew, wait another week, if your parameters are still good go and buy a your first Saltwater fish.
