Before and after pics of koi/ betta changes

I have never owned a koi/ marble gene betta. I am fascinated by their changes but usually only see their before pics never what they settle into at maturity. I kinda like knowing what I get when I buy it and even that is iffy with the poor water conditions so many come from.

In general, it seems the classic kois that are cellophane based with red, black and yellow keep their patterns better while they mature. Kois with a lot of metallic/steel blue turn more blue as they mature. From what I’ve seen a good amount that are mostly cellophane when bought will have less and less cellophane as the color of their patched spread in. I’ve never had a koi’s color fade, only darken.

Then there are tiger kois, they seem to hold their colors better but that may be because they are also more of a “classic” koi coloration with black, red, and orange with little to no blue/metallic scaling.

one day maybe I will have to “go wild” and take a break from my blue tradition and try a koi variety. Or my teen son (his betta is elderly) if he decides to replace him - then I can witness the experiment in his tank.

I bought a baby koi with very faint coloration on purpose so I could see how he’d color up. I love surprises lol. I knew he’d be primarily red because there was already some light red when I got him but here’s a before and after he grew up a little bit.







The last was taken today, and the middle was taken about a month ago! The first was the day I got him. His color keeps getting more and more vibrant.
