Can I use some base rock to supplement my live rock? If I place base rock under my live rock will the growth spread to the base rock? Can anyone offer any insight into using it? Thanks.

yes. Base rock will eventually become live rock just like whne you cycle with your filter it builds bacteria and that is exactly wht the rock will do in your tank. It may take some time before you see some pretty coraline algae on it but it WILL eventually become Live rock.

oh ok...but will it help provide filtration even without the pretty coraline algae?

Base rock is primarily used for the building of the foundation and is not as porous as the more expensive types which means its not going to be as beneficial as the really porous and light weight rock. In theory anyway.

I got tons of old rock that I pulled outta my tank. Want it? lol

Base rock is fine. I guess if you wanted it to be colonized faster you could use Bacto-boost, but I don't know if that would work.
