Bad choice of garlic?

I've had a lot of trouble getting my betta to eat pellets, so I found a jar of minced garlic to soak the pellets in.

I've used it twice, and both times, little TuI really went for the pellets. He seems perfectly happy and healthy.

THEN I found some posts on here about not using garlic containing citric acid or oil. I checked the jar, and sure enough, I'd managed to buy garlic containing both ingredients (the oil is canola).

Given that it hasn't seemed to bother my betta, is it safe to keep using the garlic? Or should I do an emergency water change? Or what?

Do we know that adding the equivalent of a drop of this stuff per day is actually going to be a problem? Is it too much of a risk?

I'll be honest, I have no experience in this. But I would do a water change to be on the safe side, just in case. Then discontinue use, at least until you get an answer form someone more knowledgable in this. I'm sure someone else will be along soon with more specific info

I am not aware of any issue with citric acid. Many feed fresh citrus to their fish, so I wouldn't expect an issue, but could be wrong.

The oil is a different story. The oil can create all kinds of issues. I would not use it at all. Instead of purchasing a jar, I mince my own garlic clove and add a few drops of water. In order to get the full benefits of garlic is has to be freshly minced. Otherwise its immune boosting properties are reduced and you completely loose its antibiotic properties.

Ok, thanks. I'll try to find non-oily garlic at the store today. It's water change day anyway, so I'll get the tiny amount of oil out that I allowed in.

Good morning,

I also use the Garlic Guard routinely for my fish. (link posted above by Maxima)

Here is a recipe to making your own if you like. I'm only posting the link for the recipe and not for garlic baths as mentioned:

"Benefits of garlic:

Purifies blood; detoxifies; lowers cholesterol levels; lowers blood pressure; blood thinner; prevents blood clots; boost immune system; prevents heart disease and strokes; destroys cancer cells; muscle relaxant; antibiotic; antifungal; suppresses growth of tumors
Using a medium size bulb; peel cloves apart, snip off ends; microwave cloves for 5 to 10 seconds to pop hulls; remove hulls; cut the length of the cloves in thin slices; place in cup of hot (from tap) water; cover, and let sit at room temperature for 12 hrs; mash the cloves and strain for immediate use; refrigerate until needed. good for two to three weeks.
The longer the cloves soak, the stronger the solution."

The information above comes from the link below:

Maybe you can find them in your area.
