What would make some good tall background plant ideas that would work well with sand?

There's many good plants. What kind of plants are you looking for? Such as low light? Or high light?

I agree with marie1. Jungle val is a good choice. You can also go with some Brazilian Pennywort. I have some in my tank and grows very tall and fast!

Anacharis is a good grower in most light conditions. It also makes for a good hiding place for fry.

Low to medium light I have low light right now but will be doing some upgrades soon but i cant really afford to go too crazy with the lighting.

Yeah I get you. You should try the plants that our fellow fish keepers suggested. They are great choices!

Bacopa, water wisteria, rotala, hornwort all grow long and tall. They all grow in low light conditions and are easy to care for. I sell them if you are interested, shoot me a PM.

Water wisteria is great IMO. It has grown my back wall really full and my cardinals love to sleep in the leaves at night.
