My mom painted the back of her tank and used a clear coat of glitter then two different colors dabbing it with a sponge and then went over the whole thing with a brush. I must say I love the look

that's so pretty!!! what kind of paint was this? I assume it wouldn't wash off with water...is your mom really good at art? I feel like if I even tried this, it'd look horrible and I'd be stuck with it on my tank lol

Water based acrylic paint. She first used some mod pod clear glitter stuff and used a brush then use a sponge and just dabbed one tone of blue in different spots then the other tone of blue in all the other spots till it was all covered. It will come of with water as it is water based and it also scratches off easy so be careful if you have a hang of filter as it will scratch some of it off if you rub the filter against the back of tank.

In the 60s and 70s we used Crystal Craze paint for the background on the outsides of tanks. The stuff smells like moth balls, but te odor soon dissipates. It also comes off easily with plain water and a putty knife. Black and dark green mixed together looked great. See
Good luck.

Using this type of paint means your possibilities are limitless.I did my 20 long using
half black and half a cobalt blue.I didn't like the backgrounds that were sold at the pet
store. Someone with artistic talent could really make a killer background using the reverse paint method.I can't though.

I can't wait to do mine. I love the way my moms came out and your right MORTENSEN, the ones in the store are . I have one on the back of my tank and I really don't like it, but I can't just move my tank to paint cause it's full with water and fish lol, so I need to wait till I can.

Yes any craft store and Walmart also. It's acrylic paint. This way if you want to change the color it washes of with water.
