Baby Mystery Snail Colors

NeriteXMystery

Hello,

I am quite confused with the color of my baby mystery snails. They are almost two months old now, and are pale footed and their shells are wild colored, and striped. What confuses me is that their parents are both dark footed. The mother is a black striped olive, and father is a blue/green. Will the babies body color soon turn dark, or remain pale?

Thanks in advance (^.^)

Edit: Forgot to mention that the babies heads are dark and the rest of the body is pale.

My single dark foot baby had a dark foot from the beginning. I don't know about the genetics of snail colors though

MongooseALaMode

That's interesting. Maybe there is a recessive trait in a grandparent or even further?

That was what I was thinking.. Since the father is blue, one of the parents of the father could of possibly been ivory, and ivory snails have pale bodies...

Does anyone have pics of baby purple snails about a week and a half after they hatched? I think I might have a few from my hatchings. I also think I have a couple gold/clear/white shells not exactly sure on the foot though on any of them yet.
My adults are the colors of the 2 pictured and I had an ivory(not if sure if male or female, and sure if it mated but it passed away), and I had a gold(was a male but also passed away).
2nd/3rd pic is of 1 of the gold/clear/white shell and a purplish color shell on a white stone.
Don't mind the other ones, there's ramshorn and bladder snails mixed in also.

I just want to compare with mine. I'm too impatient to wait lol I have from 1.5wks to just hatched today.

Congrats on the hatching!
I never came close to having babies.

star17325

Thank you. I've had 8 hatchings in the past week and a half and have 7 left. Last one was laid last night. I can't wait til the get big enough to get rid and put in my other tanks.

Mcasella

They have the "peppered" look of my baby blues when they hatch out and you can see them.

star17325

They do have a like peppered pattern on their shells. It's like a light purplish color right now. They definitely stick out from the rest. I wish I could get better pics of them right now. But they are still so small and with the others on the glass in same area my camera doesn't want to focus right.

Here is a semI good picture of what I believe are going to be purple? I have a good bit of these ones mixed in the babies.

Then here is a better pic ofthe gold/ivory color shell I was talking about.

Mcasella

The first looks like it will be a dark foot which may be purple, but it is more inept to be blue with the parents. The second looks like my ivory babies.

That one is definitely going to be purple. Congratulations, those are my faaavorite. Those little purple dots will fill in as they grow..

I’m trying to make a guide for new mystery snail breeders. I’d like everyone’s expertise! In your experience, around what age could you tell which color your mystery snails were going to be and how? Bonus points for pics lol
I’ll update this list as I get answers if I get answers.

Magenta-
Purple-
Blue-
Ivory-

Gold- probably one of the easiest identifiable colors. You can typically tell at birth that they’re gold because they will already have a gold tinted shell.

Jade-
Wild type-
Black-
Chestnut-

I will bump. Has I now have 3 clutches.

First one should be hatching soon.

The second one fell in and saved it. So that one will be touch and go.

20180311_081016.jpg

The third one just happened this morning.

I will watch this and see how it goes. And will update when things start to happen.

You can tell 10 minutes after they’re born. If you tell me the parents colors, I can tell you the what color they’ll be. It’s complicated genetics but I’ve been breeding them for years so I’ve got it down. If they’re not a sellable color you should consider only hatching 1.

Female is Ivory
Male is Ivory and they other male was black/bark brown

Pringlethesnail

Sorry I’ve had a crazy week! If the only the ivory male mated with the ivory female you’d get almost all ivory with a possibility of like 20% or less being yellow depending on genes. If the black mated with the ivory it is likely that 100% will be black the same as the father. If she mated with both theoretically you could get up to about 20% white and the rest would be black, but most likely they will all be black.

Hey thanks!! I will edit the post as it isn’t very clear. I’d like to make a guide for other people bc I couldn’t find any info about when I needed it. I was searching so hard for sites or forums to help know what color my babies would be.

The first pic are striped yellow chestnut and lsp, second is gold and white, Tibet’s is gold, chestnut and lsp. That is the full genetic chart. I learned the probability %s by experience. If the lower cased x on the chart is possible depends on lineage but you most likely (80%+) will only get the capitol X color

fastraver

Well things have not gone good with my clutches. Very first one was laid on Feb.17 and it still has not hatched.

The second and third one was laid between March 3 and March 11. So we will see how these two clusters go.

Pink, white and yellow

I love this chart. I have bout 10 clutches. Yesterday was the 14 day mark for the first one. I’m so excited.Any tips? I’m afraid they are either too dry or too wet. My trapdoor snails have produced maybe 15 babies. I really hope My mysteries turn out. I have got the baby fever ❤️❤️

MasonChase

so far I’ve hatched 3 clutches (same parents) and I have about 350 blue baby snails. There’s no difference in color, they all look the same. I’m not familiar with breeding, I’m just wanting to know if that’s normal? The father is blue and the mother is gold

It may be like a dominant/recessive kind of thing. I by no means know about dominance of mystery snail genes, but perhaps blue is dominant and yellow is recessive?

Deku-Cory

So this sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole of Mystery Snail genetics, apparently there are a number of factors that play into what color their shells will be. I... didn't find an answer but yeah interesting stuff.

heidi80

I just hatched about 5 different clutches from my mystery snails. Male is golden and females are ivory and magenta. Some of the babies shells look kind of green, however the foot is still pale. Could these babies be jade? I was hoping for some jade. I have some ivory, golden, light purple and pink for sure. They are only 2 weeks old. How long before I would possibly know if they are jade?

BigManAquatics

Do you have any pictures? Might be easier for someone to tell

heidi80

I will have to see if I can. I am not very tech savy. My husband can help me when he gets home. Later I will try and post some pictures.

mimo91088

Jade is yellow shell with a dark foot. Do any of the parents have dark bodies? Even if not they could carry the gene. So there's a good chance you could have some jade since you do have yellow shells in the breeding mix.

heidi80

I do have dark foot mystery's in my tank however none of them are the parents! LOL So I guess these babies are just a darker golden then. I was not sure if Jade could have a light foot. Thank you for the reply. I am for sure going to keep one of these darker shell babies. I really want to see how many color varieties I can get!

Depending on whether a dark body is dominant or recessive, it is possible to have jade. My mystery snail babies seem to all be gold, however the mom is gold and the dad is ivory

Based on my experience I'd say the dark body is indeed dominant and light body recessive. I've bred blues together and gotten the odd ivory in those batches.
