I can't tell you two how much I am enjoying this thread. Looking forward to the daily updates. Alison
Here is how mine changed overnight. Pic on the left is 24 hours (last night) pic on right is this morning.
Since they're on a very similar schedule I thought I would share
edit: its really hard to tell with my pics too....the glare or something. There are no white eggs on the left. And then on the right, as you can see a lot of eggs were removed/eaten. And there is a small group of white eggs at the top of the pile
Yeh I can just about make that out! I ordered some Methylene Blue earlier so that'll be here tomorrow. Hopefully save the eggs I do have left! To be honest, I'm saying I don't have many, but if all these were to hatch it would be chaos!
You should have seen my very first spawn ever! The parents learned after that spawn that they laid WAY too many eggs and every time they spawned after that they laid about half as many because clearly they were overwhelmed by that huge batch. All of the fry made it to free swimming point in that spawn, and mom and dad had a heck of a time keeping them together!
I tried to leave them with mom and dad and they all slowly died off because the water was not as pristine as it needs to be for fry and I didn't have live BBS (and there were some bottom feeders in the tank that most likely were eating them at night because the babies tend to sleep on the ground sometimes) Basically, I had no idea what I was doing, so unfortunately but the time I realized I had to move them out of there, I only ended up salvaging 4 of them. I still have 3 of them today (I gave one away)....they are nice and big and healthy
My point of the story is I know exactly how you feel. I was facing like 200+ babies at one point! I will have to post a pic of them all when they were still wigglers attached to the leaf. I have never ever seen such a large batch from ANYONE I have seen a lot of pics online but nothing like this spawn!. So I have a feeling mom and dad learned their lesson after that! HAHA and as I said before, that is a lot of the reason I wait a while before I move the fry because I can't care for a super large spawn. My last spawn of 27 was perfect!!
I am thinking about moving my current batch as soon as they start wiggling. They don't have a very large group right now and by tomorrow night when they start to become wigglers, the group will probably be even smaller.
I'd love to see a picture !
I left my last batch in my community tank and all were eaten within a day, not even one left in sight haha! My angels looks so upset when I stole their eggs but I'm sure they'll appreciate it if I return a couple to the tank k when big enough not to become a snack
Wow that first picture is crazy!! In an ideal world I guess I'd have 10-20 free swimmers to raise
well this morning all that is left is maybe 5.....they hatched overnight so they are wiggling....but there are only 5 left. Last night when I went to bed there were like 40 good eggs on there! I don't understand these two! This is the same thing that happened last time. By the time they hatched, all the parents had left were 4.
How about you MarkN1990 ? Where are things at for you and your eggs today?
Not good news from me! All eggs have called off the slate and are pure white. Can only assume they weren't fertilised. Going to get the slate back in the tank and let them have another go at it! Keep me updated on your eggs though very interested to see the timescales

Well I'm home for lunch, they're all gone :-( I'm not sure why the parents aren't understanding this. They always start out so well for the first couple days and then get lost. Boo
Well I'll see you back on this thread in a week when we get to try again!
Well done. I've tried this before but could never get it to work.
I actually got 2 more batches at least the size of the picture above from the same hatch.
What did you use when you attempted it?
I've always used a cup of water, poured some table salt in and added the eggs. They hatched alright, but then I don't have a way to separate the eggs so I can't feed them to the fish lol.I think it was a couple of quarts of water and, uh, table salt lol. I was very young and didn't yet have a sw/brackish aquarium, so I had no "real" salt.
I was following instructions from a science kit I got.

If it was iodized, the table salt could have been the deal breaker! I used aquarium salt.
Great username by the way!
Oh it definetley was. I might try again since I have aquarium salt.
Thanks! I posted a poll and everyone said I should change it to this.
Nice job Dunk2! What are you going to use them for?

Ok. Cool. The other thing I did was splurged for the Premium eggs in addition to the lower grade eggs that came with the hatchery.
I will try the lower grade at some point to see if there is a difference.
I just use 2 old soda bottles with airline tubing. One quart of water + 1 1/2 teaspoons pure sea salt + 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.
Harvest with a paper towel/coffee filter and pipette.
Once one batch has hatched I feed those for a day and start a new batch, while that batch is hatching I have another one that is ready. Took me a few tries to get a good schedule down, but this is what works for me now. I need to buy more eggs, though! My betta fry love these little shrimp.
Yup; it increases and stabilizes pH.I heard about using baking soda, but didn’t for this first batch. Is it used to increase pH?
I believe so. I've used it before without issues.I heard about using baking soda, but didn’t for this first batch. Is it used to increase pH?
