Attached My First Baby Java Fern To Driftwood—proud Parent

Just wanted to share my first baby java fern on driftwood. One is narrow leaf java fern.

I’m a proud plant parent today as I kill all plants above water.

 

Very nice! Did you glue it? I have baby java ferns as well, I haven’t been brave enough to do anything with them yet!

Thank you! Yes I did! I used the seachem flourish glue because I was too nervous to use regular super glue, but I’ve heard that the super glue is fine!

Thank you! I’m hoping so too! I think it would look cool if they met halfway since their two different types of fern!

I’m thinking of selling them attached to driftwood on Reddit aquaswap because I feel like my tank is soon to be overrun!

Congrats on your new plant. Reg. super glue will work just fine, it's all I use.

I sort of just grabbed the rhizome and roots and plucked it off, then glued them on the wood!

 

You have inspired me to do this. Right now I have mine attached to small stones with rubber bands because I was afraid I would kill them if I tried to glue them to my piece of drift wood.

I bought the glue and then chickened out Do I just glue some of the roots?

I did glue the roots, didn’t really think about it though. I hope that doesn’t keep them from growing! I think it should be fine but it you want to be extra safe you could always glue the tiny rhizomes and leave the roots free.

I just did a dab of glue where I wanted them on the wood and then stuck them on!

I would think it is best to just glue a root or two. I would think gluing the rhizome would hurt it but I don't know that for a fact thus my fear of doing it in the first place. Mine have put out a good root system so I will just glue one or two and the rest should grab on to the wood.

I will. I plan on doing it today but may wait until water change day. That will be day after tomorrow

 

Finally did it yesterday. Looks awesome with my new java fern on the bogwood.

Only issue is totally underestimated how much crazy glue was needed and over applied. So I have some dried white glue on the wood that will hopefully be covered over by the fern over time. In the meantime I tried using other plants to obscure the eyesore.

Will def do the glue method from now on. It's so easy and it really changes the feel of things to have plants glued on.

I had some moss growing in my yard. I decided to try to grow some in my experimental tank so glued it to one side of a small terracotta pot. I know what you mean about using more than was needed. I too have dried white glue showing through.

With them I just dipped a toothpick in the glue to apply it to the very bottom of the plant. hopefully the roots will grab hold of the pots. If not I will eventually attach them to wood now that I am comfortable with using the glue.

I've never actually seen how extensive a java fern roots are so I don't know. I sure hope so though. The moss I found in my yard should if I can get it to grow under water. Only time will tell on that one.

 

I have jars of Java fern babies and moss waiting to hit some driftwood, finding the right driftwood is a harder job. The Flourish glue works great, I'll never tie Java again!

I believe that with java ferns the roots are almost solely for grabbing things, and almost all of it's nutrients are absorbed through the rhizome. As long as most of the rhizome and some of the roots are free, it should do fine.
