Atlantic Condy Anemone : Anew Addition to tank and concerns

  • #1
I got 2 Atlantic Condy Anemome and 2 tank bred clownfish yesterday (Anemone hosting the clown).

I introduced them in tha tank - 1) ensuring temp match b) drip acclimation for 2 hrs.

I had a hard time getting 1 anemone off the bucket booton to move to the container to move it the tank.

I have them in the tank now for 12 hrs and I believe I may be having issue with 1 anemone.. it seems to not doing well.

See picture... ( hasv posted both a) the one doing well and b) the one not doing so well which I beleive.

Any inputs will help.

They both look great to me. What is your concern? What are your readings?

readings are fine... No NH3, Nitrates less than 5ppm, Salinity is 1.024, temp = 80~82.

The Anemone where you can see the Red base seemed all contracted (2 pics) while the one where you see it all blooming in glory .. so was wondering if this was okay....

This being the first time I keeping a anemone as a pet in tank so was not sure what signs to look at for trouble if any?

Okay if the clowns were not hosting it I would be worried. Cuz clowns will not host a sick or dying anemone. She just may need more time to adjust to the tank she looks to be young and they some times take longer to adjust. Tomorrow try target feeding her either clam, mussel, or a cut up slider. It took my girl three Weeks to fully open and show herself off . Just keep an eye on her and leave her to move around the tank until she feels safe.

Jessi.. I stopped the powerheads to observe the anemone and this is what I see.. Notice the browish white stuff...in the middle of the tenticles... what is that? it seems to be coming out and I see small specs of it in the tank... also the tank look much more cloudy as compared to yesterday ...

I also tried feeding it freeze dried shimp after soaking it in water for some time to soften it up.. I was able to feed the other one but not the one in question...

As you mentioned a clown will not host with a sick or dying ... I see 1 clown near that anemone all the time....in the last 1 hr since I have been home.. (almost touching it) -- but have not seen it snuggle in..

What type of water do you use for top offs and your salt mix? Cuz in those pics that looks like Nitrate poisoning. Which is due to nitrates in your water. Only cure is daily 10% water changes. Anemones need perfect water conditions especially young ones like her. Nitrates even a trace can affect anemones. I would turn the power heads down cuz your tank needs flow and do daily water changes with Prime to try and get your nitrates to zero. Hopefully she will feel better soon. The clown being near her is a good thing they can help her get better. I would feed her frozen they are better and healthier for her.

JessI -- I am not using Ro/RI water .. I use water from the tap whih goes through a PUR filter and then gets added to a Brita Jar which is then used to top off. For salt mixes I do the same or I use a 5 gallon container of water from walmart.

I alos checked the nitrates, NH3 after ur email. I had changed water on this Sunday and it was < 5ppm. I checked yesterday and it was up to 20 PPM so I have done the 10% water change yesterday. I will do another change today for 10%.

I noticed after the water change the clown go snuggle it with the anemone.

I check the water quality every week after a water change and it was always around 5 ppm. 1 am not sure how it increased to 20 ppm in 4 days when my bio load is not high.

what kind of frozen food do u suggest (when u say cut up slider -- what is a slider? Would frozen shrimp from a grocery store do?

Any frozen seafood will do just make to ask if it has any hormones in it. Cuz some farm raised seafood does. And hormones are bad they can do more harm than good. Sliders are a type of fish that most Saltwater LFS sell. Do you have and frozen fish food cuz I just learned my girl loves bloodworms lol. Water changes are the only thing to keep nitrates down most Saltwater life can not tolerate nitrates in the water. I do carbon dosing in mine to keep the nitrates down. Plus my refugium has grape grass in it to keep mine down. Mine have been 0 since I started the monthly carbon dosing and put my refugium on it .

JessI .. Thanks for helping out... I still am learning

I did 2 water changes 2 consecutive days .. the API saltwater kit says nitrates b/w 5~10 ppm (see picture).

The anemones also seems to be doing fine.. I will keep doing water changes till I hit 5 ppm or less...

I do not forzen food. The frozen shrimp is what was recommended by the LFS. I will check out what else they have available and if they have sliders too. Will also get some frozen shrimp

Parsippany-Troy Hills-20121109-00050.jpg w/o growth hormones if I can..

BTW I added a Aquarclear 70 filter I had to run for a few days ... am using with activated carbon, sponge filter, Ammonia remover modules. Will run it a few days just to get the various small stuff in the water to get clarity back..

Looks good . I turned my 110 into my refugium. Hopefully soon the nitrates will be close to 0 . I get all my frozen from LFS,Ebay, and grocery store .

Jessi... I also took a video of the 2 anemones... I stopped the powerheard for a like a few mins and and then took a video of both ... I first anemone you see if the one I was concerned about .. the 2nd (with the frozen shirmp
near it's center) is doing fine...see how the anemone is in question is just limp w/o flow while the 2nd one is all blooming... I then started the powerheards and now you can see how it starts waving around with the water flow.... the clown till hosts with the anemone in question... hopefully I can get it to fully recover

BTW .. I have also not been able to get the anemone the one I had concerns about to feed .. the other one just picked you the frozen shrimp pretty quick....

Yeah that is normal for having nitrate poisoning I would be more worried if she was not moving at all. She moves but not like the other one she good not as bad as she did in the photos. If the clown is still going in her to snuggle with her she is eating clowns fed the anemone they host. Now just give her time and watch her and your lvls. Plus I noticed she reacts with a fish near her that is a good thing .

Sorry I'm late to the party here.

I tend to agree with everything above, but for the record, anemones do the hosting, the clown does not host the 'nem.....

With 'nems (and Saltwater in general), you need to give it time. I battled for 3-4 weeks with my anemone, it just didn't seem happy. Then one day, out of the blue, I came home and it was opened up like a dinner plate.

I would say, keep your water parameters in check, particularly NO3 < 4, PO4 < 2, and be patient.
