Arm broke out in hives seconds after being in tank

I reached into my freshwater tank to remove a few pest snails and within seconds of removing it I developed hives. Any idea what would cause this reaction? I dosed with erythromycin a few days ago.

Has this ever happened before? And is your arm okay?

I haven’t had it happen before with my tank, although I have extreme reactions to bloodworms (no longer feed) and cats, as well as milder reactions to numerous other things. The arm is fine, super itchy and I took Benadryl.

I wonder if you are allergic to erythromycin. It seems like rashes are the primary indication of an allergy to that medication.

How Do I Know If I Have an Erythromycin Allergy?
If the only change you’ve made to your tank is adding Erythromycin to your tank then I’d think this would be the likely cause of your reaction.

I’m glad your arm is okay- your reaction could’ve been way worse and it’s good it wasn’t too bad

Bloodworms get me, just have to wear gloves! And an LFS owner I know gets the same thing if he goes near Brine Shrimp.

That would make sense, although it is weird. I have dosed that med numerous times in the past without issue, but I also seem to be getting better at acquiring sudden allergic reactions to new things haha. I do have an epi-pen though.

Dang- that sucks- I can kinda relate tho as I recently (in the past month) developed lactose intolerance, but sudden allergic reactions are much more dangerous and scary.

I feel so guilty because my fish love them! I get anaphylactic reactions though if any of their components (including dust in the air from dried ones) get in my face.

All of my health problems stem from my immune system being a bit of a drama queen. I’m sorry to hear about your intolerance, I know that kind of things with common foods can be tough.

Yep! After a couple years noticed when I fed freeze dried bloodworms, I started sneezing, had to wear a face mask until I finished the container but... "No More". Just "Frozen" now and gloves.
What a pain but,,, my fish grow like crazy and healthy.
