I'm not vegetarian.
My wife is, however.
Okay, technically, she is a lacto-ovo-pescatarian. (which means she eats vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, and fish products)

I could never become a vegetarian, I love meat way to much. I still love my veggies a lot though. I am one of those weird people that love most veggies. But I still like my moo cows and piggys. Yum YUM.

I am I am. I didn't do it because I don't like meat though - a lot of it is delicious. I did it for the ecological damage that gross amounts of meat consumption wreaks on our world. I have no interest in starting a global warming or economic debate but there can be little argument that the overwhelmingly carnivorous habits of our world have had an effect.

I don't push it on anyone else though - my daughter eats what she wants and my fiance loves a good steak. Everything in consumption though.

I limit my meat and will often replace it with mushrooms or some sort of meat substitute because of the inefficiency of the production of meat. I try to make as much of my meat as possible come from game animals, as well, because when they are farmed, they are generally raised in areas that are more than just short grass. It's often natural prairies, sometimes even woods.

he he he, Sabi, you sound just like my man! He wouldn't even dream about it. He's going round to my family looking all miserable so people will feed him meat! And every so often, when he's done something REALLY amazingly good, I'll not resist and cook him a steak. We have a saying at home: Everytime Thijs is being nice, a cow dies.

I'd do that but I've decided it'll cost me less time and energy to just go 100%. You're closer to the position I'd have chosen, basically, were it not for the lack of time to research which food distributor is and which is not ethical. And then, before I knew it, I was kinda disgusted by meat (I think your body adapts), so that sorted that dilemma out.

Yeah!!! Another one.

I don't believe in pushing. I hate it when people do it to me, so I try to not do it to others. I actually don't find it morally wrong or anything to eat meat. It's just: each to their own. Whether you're a meat eater or not is (to me) a personal choice that has to be respected, and I can't stand it when people try to make me change my mind, or when vegetarians forcefully try to 'convert' people.

haha thanks.

I always wanted to be a veggie when I was little but my mother told me no until I was 1) in high school and 2) capable of cooking my own meals if necessary.... So when I was 14 I became a veggie. lol I decided I'd only do it until I felt like it was over and exhausted.. and until I craved some meat. (At the very beginning I had some cravings but I wanted to get past that...) It just happened to take me 6 years to really want something.

Do you know what it was I broke my 6 years on? A Burger King Chicken Sandwich. lol I wanted one SO bad.

Only doctors who don't really know anything about vegetarians don't suggest it while pregnant. There are too many doctors (and other medical professionals) who talk about how horrible vegetarian diets are, but they don't really know anything about the diet, and obviously aren't applying their knowledge of human physiology to the question.
As far as a vegetarian diet and pregnancy go, it's definitely possible. The biggest issue isn't going to be health, it's going to be sanity. You can easily get the proteins you need (especially if you eat eggs, they're a nearly perfect source of protein). The problem is that your body doesn't necessarily care about what it needs, there are going to be things that it wants and it wants them NOW!
My wife's doctor has been very supportive and encouraging regarding her diet. She's said that the only thing she will stand firm on is that my wife needs to take a prenatal multivitamin if she's going to continue to be a vegetarian through a pregnancy (a situation that has not come up yet).

Oh I wasn't saying medically impossible. I just figured I'd get loads of cravings, like I've heard my veggie friends had during their pregnancies. But it's good that your wife has gone through it. I'll remember in case it happens to me, I'll know of someone with a similar experience.

But guys, like I said, let's not get excited about lots of little Armadillo fry just yet!

She hasn't yet gone through it. Her doctor has just told her what to expect and what she'd need to do to make it through.

I don't eat meat from 4 legged animals.....so that's me eating just fish and chicken really. I don't eat ducks cos I like ducks (they're cute!). it started when I was 17 and no longer living at home. but before that I was reluctant to eat red meat as I found it chewy and hard work to cut and eat, and didnt like the taste. I then saw an on farm slaughter of a cow and it didnt go quite as it should and that put me completely off beef and didnt touch any since.
I also don't push my beliefs on anyone and don't agree with anyone else who thinks they have the right to do so. same with religion etc. each person has freedom of choice and we should respect each others choices. my hubby and my kids eat all meats (although I don't cook it. they can have a ham sandwich, but no steaks etc). I use chicken or turkey mince alot, and we have a lot of dairy (except one of my sons who's intollerant to it). so we still get plenty of protein and iron.
I think being a veggI thru preg is fine, as your dairy and eggs will provide the iron and protein etc, and besides, the baby will take all it needs from you, so rarely does a baby do without....if anyone suffers...it'd be the mum who'd be deficient. I think vegans would struggle though to have enough protein and iron etc to form a healthy baby without being deficient in vits and minerals themselves.
pregnancy can make your tastes go really wonky! i'm 29 and had no red meat since I was 17 but a few weeks ago I craved a hotdog!! I didnt give in though, but was quite alarmed! I also don't like chocolate anymore (very odd!). my friend also craved red meat when she was preg, and did give in and ate loads of it, but once baby was born she was back to her normal red-meat free foods!

I wish the guys from the martial arts forum I'm on could see this thread. (or, more importantly, would bother to read it)
They have this idea that 100% of vegetarians, every single one of them, are harpies that ram their beliefs down the throats of any carnivores nearby.
They didn't believe me that not all are like that. I tried to explain to them that the vegetarians who don't do that aren't often known as vegetarians because they don't try to cram it down everyone else's throats, but they want to hang on to their misconceptions.
It's kind of funny that they were all pushy and obnoxious while talking about how pushy and obnoxious vegetarians are, and all of you are very supportive of meat-eaters' choice to be meat-eaters.
Protein isn't so difficult to come by, and iron isn't, either, as long as you can stand really dark green veggies like spinach. One of the "B" vitamins is really hard for full vegans to come by, which is part of the reason that my wife's doc told her she had to take a prenatal multivitamin any time she could possibly be pregnant.

I wouldn't ever go that route, our bodies need the protein from meats and I wouldn't really want to take a bunch of vitamins via pill form just to keep my protein level up.

I had a roommate who was vegan, and man did she eat well! I suppose she still does, lol, but she moved out of town. She made lots of curry, and veggie sushI and stews and soups. While we were roommates I ate very little meat, and didn't really notice the difference. The one thing I just didn't want to cut down on was cheese. Sharp cheddars, smoked goudas, manchego, and all sorts of others. So much flavor is such a small amount of food. I don't see myself being able to give up dairy, or having the dedication to avoid all sauces that use non-veggie stock when dining away from home.

It's not protein you get from vitamins, it's a couple of vitamins and minerals (the B vitamin I mentioned earlier, for example). Protein's easy to come by. Soy products, all sorts of beans, mushrooms, eggs and dairy products (if you're not full vegan), etc...
I'm with you, though. The few times I've been faced with one of the belligerent vegans, I've been quick to point out that human physiology is omnivorous in nature. There's little they can do to argue the facts (like, we have forward-facing eyes, a predatory setup, or the fact that we have teeth for shearing meat as well as for chewing plant material), they get upset and walk away. I don't resort to these tactics, however, unless someone accuses me of being evil for eating a hamburger, especially if I've gone out of my way to be sure that my hamburger came from a free-range cow that was fed a vegan diet.

Exactly, we were meant to eat both plants and animals and our bodies were designed too, so we shouldn't 'starve' it of what it is meant to do.

.....and, while I don't have any insight as to your regular diet, the probability is that you DO need a vitamin to balance your diet. because of the way that our food is grown now most diets are lacking something or another, no matter how carefully you eat.

But really for us, we grow our own vegetables and get our eggs straight from the chickens since we know were to look and none of them have any of the vitamin robbing chemicals on/in them.

we still eat some meat but buffalo is the only red meat and chicken, turkey, fish are the main meats in the diet now for us.

btw: I can just imagine armadillo swimming around a tank, squirting babies out left & right..

I mean, personally, once I came out the light side of the dark tunnel called veggie, I realized, I was meant to eat anything I could kill! Plants, chickens, squirrels, cows, horses, elephants, BABIES, children under the age of 12, (I find 13 year olds a bit chewy..)... and really! I'm eating great these days! I'm and EXPERT BBQ-er......
