Are Dried Out Bio Rings Still Effective?

HI all,

I recently purchased a new 28 bow front to upgrade from my 10 gallon. YAY! I already had an AC30 that I brought over from my 10 gallon and it seems to be doing OK, but I have been toying with the idea of also using the Fluval C4 Power Filter as well, possibly replacing the AC30 at some point so I can make a shrimp tank out of the old 10 gallon.

But I digress. I got all brand new filter media with the C4 with exception to new bio rings. He already had it full, but they're dried out now. My question is if those bio rings are still effective since they were wet at one point and dried out. I mean, I know they ship dry, but I wasn't sure if drying out had an adverse effect on them.

Thanks!

Yes you can still use them. Just consider the bio rings new media and start.

Other then having no live bacteria right now they are safe to reuse.

Gotcha! Thanks Cichlidude That's what I figured, but I wanted to make sure. It'll be some time before I go with just the C4 to ensure that the filter media is seeded. That's right term isn't it? LOL

Hello, just before setup you may want to gently boil them to remove any contamination then soak overnight in treated water. Better safe than sorry. Hope this helps you!

Yeah I guess I might as well. I already gave the filter itself a good cleaning so might as well make sure there isn't anything undesirable in the bio media. I was reading online that some people even use bleach or hydrogen peroxide watered down bleach. I think I'll just go with the boiling and soak. Thanks!
