Are Bladder Snails Ok To Have?

I got a new plant to put in my tank and left it in the bag for a little while I was cleaning the tank. Once I put it in I noticed a single snail on it, I took the plant out and didn’t find any but that one. I then found out it was a bladder snail, I know bladder snails have a bad wrap but I can’t bring my self to kill it so is it ok to keep it in the tank?

I would not leave it in the tank.

Although I love all living creatures I would crush the out of any bladder you see.

This is because left to their own devices they become a serious problem.

Best to nip it in the bud, so to speak.

If not you will regret it.

If you like snails there are some nice ones to keep that do not cause many problems and can be very useful algae eaters. I like my Tiger Nerite for this reason.

Thank you for the advice and I was planning on gettting some Nerite snails either way!

What are you going to do when you can't see through the glass anymore?

They will not hurt anything but I do not like them. They snuck into the 150 gallon and are now all over the aquarium. I have around 20 mysteries in there so I really can not do anything to get rid of them.

Oh, and there is no such thing as "one snail"

Take it out while you still can. Either crush, or make a little set-up for them if you're so inclined, but don't leave them free in your main tank. (Voice of bitter experience).

I guess I'm the odd-man-out since I deliberately add lots of bladder and ramshorn snails to my aquariums. Yes, they can breed like crazy. But, in my opinion, they are an important part of the ecosystem of a planted tank. They devour uneaten food and decaying organic matter, and their waste fertilizes the plants. They only reproduce to the point that the tank can sustain their population. They also are constantly grazing for algae, keeping plants and your glass clean. In a heavily planted tank, when they die, their bodies are eaten and also used as nutrients by plants. Over time their empty shells will break down and dissolve, adding calcium back into the tank for plants to utilize.

Not a popular reason for liking them, but it seems logical to me. Same reason I like seeing copepods and worms in my shrimp tank!
