Aqueon Quiet Flow 50

Has anyone had a problem with this filter shutting down? I use one on my 30 gallon planted and have a pre-filter on the intake tube. It will just stop and I have to take it off the tank, fiddle with intake and plug it back in. It resumes filtration. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have had several different models of the AQUEONS.

When you say it "shuts down" I am assuming you mean that it just stops ( water filled up but not running ) do you hear the motor or can you feel it vibrating? If you pull the bottom part of where the intake connects ( the plastic part snaps off ) the impeller inside is what you might want to check. Sometimes it can get clogged up and cause the entire filter to stop. Its magnetic ( the impeller ) so you will have to pull on it to get it down. After you have checked that, plug it in for a second to see if it moved ( its okay if its out of the water if only for a second to verify its working )

Thanks Junne for the help. Yes it just stops. No vibrating, no motor movement or sound. On the several occasions that this has happened I've had to unsnap the bottom part that you mentioned. There is nothing impairing the movement of the impeller. It is clean. I turn the impeller a few times and plug in the filter and it starts up again. Really strange. I've been wondering if I should try a different brand of HOB.

How long have you had it? Can you return it? I have 3 of these ( slightly different model numbers AQ 30, and 2 of the 55/75's ) and have only had the 30 get stuck on me twice in 2 years, the other 2 filters have never gotten stuck.

I don't know - maybe try using some vasoline ( or lubricant ) on the impeller stem???

So I cleaned this specialty filter on my quiet flow filter a little over a week ago and this is what it looks like already. Is this normal?

How many gallons is your tank?
What’s your stocking?

If you have a lot of waste production, you’ll end up a with a dirty filter. I tend to schedule my filters cleanings each month, if not sooner than that.
You may need to replace the cartridge, but don’t throw this one out. Put a new one behind it, and then remove the older one after three weeks have passed.
