Aqueon Pro Heater (Red Knob)

Does anyone have any experience with the new Aqueon Pro Heater (red knob, blue is the older model). I heard the newer ones are being manufacturer by a different company so the quality went downhill. Any thoughts? I had the older model which has been running great for 3 years and it failed on me this morning. I was putting it at the bottom of the sump so maybe thats why its stop working who knows. Any thoughts on this?

I have heard the same about manufacturer. I just have the regular Aqueon heaters, haven't had problems with those yet in the few months i have had them. 3 years does seem a decent stretch of time though.

Yes its super durable (also shattered proof) that's why I want to get the same heater but im hesitate bc the newer ones have bad rep at this point Im leaning toward the Eiheim Jager, lots of great reviews.

I have had too many of the new Aqueon Pros fail either by splitting or by just not working properly .
With 50 aquariums I used to say I am all aqueon ,but now I am looking to titanium heaters like hygger ..
No fan of Ehiems either ..

I've been using hygger on all my tanks. They are a bit expensive. My oldest one is approx 20 month old and so far good but in my eyes they have not yet gotten the point of the longevity test. Drop a note in 3 or 5 years and remind me to see if they are all still working

Oh interesting I never heard of hygger but I'll look it up. Did you have bad experience with Eheim heater?

Actually did a quick gg search and yes they are pricey. Have you use either aqueon pros or eheim heater before? If yes what was your experience with them?

Eheim are notoriously hard to calibrate. I just got my second or third one and it took me 12 days to finally be able to make it work, and it’s off 3 degrees. That’s the best I could do.

My old one, which I kept as a back-up, was also hard to calibrate and off by 1-2 degrees. It »only » took a few days to calibrate. Some people never manage to do so and have to replace them.

But once they’re working, they’re usually reliable. My old one is 12-15 years old and still works.

From what i have read eheim suffers the same as aqueon - the new ones are just not as durable as the old ones. Mind you i don't own them so it is just hersey.

I personally can’t stand the pros. Mine failed so fast after I got it and I always had to turn the temp much higher Bc I felt the coating prevented from heating as well as the regular aqueons. I have an extra pro for emergencies, yet I choose to use regular over that Bc I don’t trust them.

I love the blue ones. This is sad to hear. Why do companies always gotta screw with the stuff that works?

If anyone who works at Aqueon reads this: The heaters were fine. It's your filters that are garbage. Focus changes there and stop screwing with the things that don't suck.

Yes, it happened to me about a month ago. There was a lot of debate about it but I believe it killed half of my fish.

It was a Fluval 200 watts. I found out it was shattered when I got little shocks on my hands after touching it.

That's one of the things I like about this heater. Plastic instead of glass.

Just as a note, if you call Aqueon they will send you a new heater if you mail them the failed one as apart of the lifetime warranty. Or if you have original receipt they will do the same if you email them a photo.

Doesnt help you in the meantime but at least it gives you a spare heater on the shelf. I have a couple Eheim heaters and Fluval as well. They both work but I think the Eheims are pretty inaccurate out of the box and need to be tinkered with as previously stated. I’m pretty happy with my Fluval M series heater but I wish the temperature showed more numbers, you kind of end up guessing In between. It’s not too tricky to dial in though.

My favorite heater of all time was the Marineland Stealth heaters they made years ago. They were a composite body like the Aqueon Pro. There was a issue though as they aged that causes them to all be recalled and they pulled the design. They were super accurate though.

I had one of the Stealth heaters. It shorted out and nearly electrocuted my fish, even though I had a GFCI. I understand the Aqueon Pro heaters were similar in design to the Stealth heaters, so I won't get one. I do hope they fixed the issue that led to the recall.

Oh I thought it was easy to calibrate after I watched a few youtube tutorials I ordered it today so hopefully I am able to calibrate it correctly. But didnt the manufacturer calibrated them before they ship them out?

Which model did you use, the newer ones or the older ones? That sucks to hear bc the older aqueon pros lasted 3 years for me with zero problem. Not so sure about the newer model.

Yup. Thats why I got it for my acrylic sump.

Yes, I had a blue Aqueon split. There is a surprising amount of sand inside them. There’s usually 1-2 Aqueons that die each year I’ve worked in the fish lab. I also don’t trust the need for calibration on the Eheims because my room temp fluctuates a lot. I have already dealt with constant heater checks while using a Marina and don’t want a repeat.

I used an H7 for 3 years until it stopped heating due to being overworked (building heat wasn’t on yet, the room was 60F mid day furthest from the windows, and the temp I was trying to heat to was 81F).

Yea I called them yesterday and they are in the process of sending me a replacement (lead time is about 2 weeks). The tank temperature dropped from 84 to 71 so my Flowerhorn was laying on the bottom I was afraid he will get seriously ill so I went to Petsmart to pick up a new Aqueon Pros 300W (for my acrylic sump, I think being plastic itd be better for my sump since its laying at the bottom and next to the sump wall). I ordered the Eheim heater for my other tank, so we'll see how it goes Personally I love fluval product such as the fx series but never tried their heater before so maybe if both Aqueon and Eheim failed on me then I can try their heater haha.

Fluval sells two types of heaters. The "M" design is based on the earlier Aquaclear heater. The "E" design is a newer design. I have had multiple Aquaclear heaters over the years. They seem to last as long as most others. They will all fail sooner or later.

What a shame. I really liked them, but I suppose it's time to move on.
I have been using Aqueon Pros since I started 3+ years ago based on coralbandit reviews. I was up to 6 tanks and a few plant grow out tubs. Only one failure and they replaced it. So I always recommended them.
But...last week, I setup a 10g and cleaned the 33L. Pulled a 50w (Blue knob) from my inventory and noticed some sand, it appears it has split, and then a 150w (Red knob) has failed to heat, the light flickers, switches from green to red. Will be contacting them. And before anyone comments, they have never been powered on without being totally submerged.
So, been researching, decided to try the Ehiem in the 33L, based on my LFS recommendation, in tank since yesterday.
https://www.amazon.com/Eheim-Jager-Aquarium-Thermostat-Heater/dp/B003SNU1I2/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1IKAK988T87DO&dchild=1&keywords=eheim+heater&qid=1607261566&s=pet-supplies&sprefix=Eheim,pets,257&sr=1-2
Also, just ordered the Hygger to place in my 55g as redundancy, just in case.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08BNXFWBN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And this one for the 10g,
Hygger 50W 100W Submersible Digital Mini Aquarium Heater
Will monitor and review.

I’m very happy with the Fluval E series heater. It has a digital readout of the temperature in the tank, and the backlighting will turn blue, green, or red if the temperature of the tank is colder, spot on, or warmer than the temperature you have selected. So from a quick glance across the room you know the temperature. Of course, I have a thermometer in the tank and compare it at least once a day and it is always spot on.

I’ve only had it since July so I can’t speak to the longevity of it. It has a nice guard around it too, to prevent breaking and fish touching it.

Well the Eheim is working fine. Set at 79 temp reads 78.8. Just will not consider it for my main display tank since the glass is very reflective and distracts during viewing. Will continue to monitor.
The Fluval E looks promising, but not available on Amazon just the M.
Searching is so much fun?

I think they just don't make em like they used to. Really is an issue since fishes can be rather fussy about their temp.

Eek I just bought a Jager for the 5g. I hope it lasts longer than the Hyggar 50w I got in January that fried my fish.

My all time favorite was the Fluval Tronic. I still have one that works 20 years later......I just don't trust it anymore because it is 20 years old....lol

I tend to feel like a lot of things in the hobby, heaters just aren’t made like they used to be.

It seems we have to just accept that more and more products become consumables.

I bought one of those a year or so ago. It worked for about 45 seconds.
It was pretty accurate until it wasn't. Lasted about 8 months.

Unfortunately, I think that’s about right for a lot of heaters nowadays. I think my Finnex lasted 6 or 7.

I have a HPG in the 55g right now. Had it since last year sometime. Kal said his died but mine is still doing just fine.
