Aqueon 75 Hob Filter

Well I got this filter along with a 45 gal tank/stand & accessories for free on craiglist .

Today I started taking it all part, clean it out, restock it with my media and start seeding it from my 75gal. I made my own media "cartridges" and stocked it with coarse, medium, fine pads then the 2nd chamber I have a net bag with lava rocks, medium, fine pads and then last is the purigen sac.

I mount it up and plug it in, it starts working no problem. Problem I do have with it, is it's noisy LOUD as ****! I mean it's ungodly loud. It's rattling my whole 75gal. I'm across from it and it just rattling like ****. I cleaned the impeller housing with boiling hot water since you can't really take the impeller out to fully wash it. In the bucket it didn't make that much noise, but now it's driving me crazy

I don't know if I'm going to leave it on to seed or not. The noise is horrible. What a shame too, I thought it had potential. Not gonna chuck it away tho, might come in handy as a back-up for a back-up, but it sure ain't gonna be a main.

Let it settle in often a bit of fish gunk will gather around the impellor magnet and soften that sound, which often comes after a depp clean. Also inspect the impellor for gouging or damage as that could cause it? if so just replace the impellor.

I just checked the impeller, looks fine. So I'm not sure if it's the impeller or the bearings that hold the impeller in balance.

Well, looks like I'll need a whole new pump assembly with impeller. I took it apart again, lubed it up with vaseline, reassembled it and when I power it up it just rattles like the dickens
Gonna look around ebay and see if I can snag a replacement on the cheap. Trying my best not to sink a lot of money in this project.

I hate the vaseline trick as it only sometimes works and then a couple weeks later its leeching that vaseline all into your tank anyways!

Sounds like something in the impeller or housing is damaged to rattle that bad. You may be able to find a new impeller for it. I love me some aqueon hob though.

Hmm, gotta keep an eye on that. I've never seen it in my tanks and I've had several. Thanks tho!

I think it's the impeller's bushings, but I may have a bite on a used pump motor on ebay, but doesn't say if it comes with the impeller. Just fired off a message to the seller asking. If it does, I'm gonna snag it.

Sounds like you had a good find with that used one. If you have good surface agitation the Vaseline is less noticeable, but it’s still there and if you don’t it forms a loveley white film on your water surface!

Ratz! Well I'll keep my eyes open. Yeah I lucked out with the freebie find. I also noticed a rattle in my SunSun 304b. Apparently these are known to do that. I ordered a new impeller for it so that is first priority as it's on my 75gal cichlid tank. I'll order a new impeller for the Aqueon 75 and hope that will fix the issue.

Looks like I’ll have to check out Craigslist for a freebie find like yours because that’s a great one. I hate noisy filters and the very first one I ever owned was very loud until I basically learned how to take it apart in my sleep. Fingers crossed that the new impeller fixes your issue

Thanks bud! I should have it in a few days. Can't wait to mod it up and get it into service on my 75gal Cichlid tank.
