Aquatics Unlimited

My husband and I went out for a drive today and wandered in to a place called Aquatics Unlimited () in Greenfield, WI. There are over 12000 gallons of freshwater fish, 3000 gallons of saltwater fish, 1000 gallons of pond with different Koi in it. The store has been in business for over 40 years. There were about 15 employees on staff. We talked to 4 different people, each with a good understanding of the fish in the tanks. If we asked a question that the employee didn't know, they found someone that did. They steered people away from fish that wouldn't work in their tanks. They talked extensively about the nitrogen cycle. They also made recommendations based on what we were looking for. The had a lot of common types of fish, such as Platy and Guppy. They had slightly less common types like Endlers (which are uncommon where I'm from) and Pygmy Cory. They also had many fish I had never heard of, like the Vampire Pleco. The fish were healthy, the tanks were clean, and the ones under quarantine were clearly marked. The tanks were, I believe, 30 gallons each and while still very stocked, wasn't nearly as full as a chain pet store. They had huge display and show tanks with sharks, Oscars, Rays, Arowanna, and many other types of fish. They had a good selection of new tanks, but also a section with used tanks.

All in all, it was a great experience. If you're ever in the Milwaukee, WI area I'd highly recommend hitting up this store!

Sounds like I need to move to Milwaukee. I haven't been able to find a LFS near where I live.

They had so many rams there. I know you were looking for GBR's a few weeks ago. They had a tank of them and they had Bolivians all over the place. They also had Kribs in all different sizes in varieties like double red and double orange. It was crazy!

Even if you don't plan on buying fish, I'd still check it out. Some of the fish in there are CRAZY big and awesome looking.

Same here. The closest decent ones are 2-3 hours away, and not anything like what Aquatics Unlimited sounds like.

There's also an aquatic club called Madison Area Aquatic Hobbyists that is putting on an auction with stock from local breeders and enthusiasts on the 19th. I just might have to go to that!

I second this store. They have a good selection of fish and supplies including pond stuff. I haven't really talked to the staff other then to get some fish, they did ask how long my tank had been setup though.

That they do. I've also heard them tell people about the nitrogen cycle and refuse to sell someone a Gourami because they didn't have a heater.
