They always told me to never say you’re sorry for asking questions. In my book there is no such thing as a dumb question except the one that goes unanswered. The cure for ignorance is education and education comes from asking questions so don’t ever say you’re sorry for asking to be educated.

Now for me getting around to answering your question about filters. The Top Fin filter does have a bit more room to add extra media without restricting the water flow and in my personal opinion more is better in this case.

how about a top fin 40 and aqua tech 20-40 or a top fin 40 and aquatech 5-15?

sorry that I post a lot

"a lot" is relative posting is what keeps the forum active, so it's nothing to be sorry for. Unless you start 5 threads on the same topic.

I would get a canister. I've phased out just about all the HOBs in favor of canisters, even on the 10 gallon. It's never been so quiet and my tanks have never been so clean

I like canisters but my range is up to about 50 dollars and has to be in store.

I like my aqua tech 30-60 better. the top fin has water that flows out around the intake tube without being filtered.

check craigslist for a canister filter. I got a rena xp3 for 50 and another one for 25.

different from everyone but I decided to go with the top fin 40 with a aquatech 20-40 or 5-15 what do you think.
And my parents won't let me get used aquarium stuff

ok thanx

I discovered that I don't have enough room so I am getting the 5-15

I decided to get the top fin 60 with two aqua tech 5-15(I have one right now) hanging on the the top fin.

Aquatech, tetra and topfin are almost exactly the same filter. Topfin is made by tetra and at is made by a subsidiary of tetra.

Anyway, for your price range could you have your lfs order an aquaclear or fluval C series?

I believe that the aqua tech is the old model penguin filter made by marine land without the bio wheels.
I agree, an aquaclear or fluval c series would be a better investment in the long run. The difference in water quality will be blatantly apparent.

I use aquaclears on all my tanks, they are die-hards. I had 2 topfin filters and the motor burnt out on both, its not fun at 11pm when the store are closed and you realize your filter just died. I have never had an aquaclear fail me.

I too have had Topfin fail on me.

Why don't you care for Aquaclear? They are one of the best made and functioning filters on the market. And they have a very high gph rating, especially compared to AT and Topfin.

I don't think that's in my local petsmart and as said above I am not a fan of ordering online

I am removing the top fin 60 for the top fin 40 again so I can hand the aquatechs on the tank.

What do think of having on aqueon quietflow 10?

Oh, I wasn't aware petsmart was the only store available. Then I would get the fluval C2.

I have a 50 and not impressed... food(flakes in this case) can bypass the sponge and go back to the tank(that's why I have a tetra 3I and a homemade filter in there)

The C2 is 119 gph.

another question do you know the dimensions

thanx

I read the reviews and they said it is loud without lubing the impeller. How can I lube the impeller without using Vaseline(I do not have vasiline) can I use vegetable oil

Jaysee

IME you can go crazy reading reviews.

I wouldn't use vegetable oil as they are completely different Vaseline is sold everywhere - I'm sure you can find some on the way back from petsmart.

do you think 6 in. is the length if it is I can barely fit it on my tank(I am putting it with my top fin 40 and aqua tech 5-15)what other filters do you think are ok or recommend

Dimensions are always L x W x H, so I am inclined to believe that it's 4.5 inches across, 6 inches deep and 8 inches high. But I guess it could be the other way....depends how you look at it....

I read info from another site and it said it was 6in. length(left to right)so nevermind.
umm what other filters do you recommend

Eh, I was not impressed with the penguins. They're not bad, if you use custom media I guess.

Slightly off topic but...
The emperors were better. They came with a custom media basket to fill with the media of your choice. Plus the bio wheel was powered by a desperate spray bar. The only problem was they're noisy.

Then aqueon 10 or tetra ex20 or top fin 20 or aquatech 5-15

Aqueon has almost zero biological filtration. The blue grids are garbage. Same with the tetra ex series. I'm sure you wouldn't want to hear my recommendation of which HOB is the best.

now it is either Fluval c2(very tight fit!), Aquatech 5-15 or Penguin 100

Fluval C2 all the way. Will outlast the others and is much better for bio filtration. Remember, many times people only write reviews when something goes wrong. You'll drive yourself crazy if you decide which to buy purely by anecdotal advice.
