I think java fern has a rhizome which shouldn't be buried in the substrate. if I t is make sure you take it out.

How long have you had it? Its common for new plants to go through a brief melting period as it establishes to the new conditions.

Watch for black dots on back of leaves it will get tons of babies soon. You won't have issues soon just don't bury the new batch and glue them to a rock or wood.
