Aquarium salt for electrolytes?

I have added Aquarium salt for electrolytes in my freshwater tank. The package gives the dose per gallon and says to only add more salt at water changes. So, do I add the salt directly to the new fresh water I am adding (2 gallons) or do I dose the whole tank after the water change is complete?

 

You only add as much salt as you changed out for your water change. Ex. If you had 8 tbsp total salt changed out 50% only add back 4 tbsp salt. It doesn't evaporate or or otherwise dissipate. I have a bad memory & a notebook for that stuff to keep track

For two gallons I think it's .5tsp per gallon right? So your total salt should remain 1 tsp however that adds up with your water changes depending what fish you have a bit more can be ok or less ok if you want to give more info

 

What fish are you keeping. You might not even have to bother. Are you using tap water?

 

I have one goldfish. I am using tap water, conditioned. It's pretty fresh and soft water, low minerals and no nitrates.

 

Are electrolytes what fish crave?

 

Most fresh water fish really don't benifit from salt in the tank.
Whithout a hydrometer, you really have no way to how much salt you remove when you do a water change. And the amount of salt can build up, and the possible benifits are not worth the possible negatives.
I recommend adding Seachems paraguard, or almond leafs. or live plants instead.

 

What you’ll want to do is get a KH test kit and test carbonate hardness. Then if that’s low get one of the Seachem products that raise KH to keep your ph stable. That will do a much better job and add more beneficial things than aquarium salt will.
