Hey guys. I'm kinda new to this, don't know a whole lot about it. I currently own a 29 gallon aquarium. With various types of tetras. However I recently decided to give all of my tetras away to a friend of mine, as I would now like to do a goldfish setup instead. I now have an empty aquarium, all of the decorations/plants have been removed. I now have 8 corydoras and 1 pleco remaining in the tank, which I did not give away when I gave all of my tetras away. When I had my tetras, there was a big piece of wood in my aquarium, which caused the water to turn brownish, tea like. But as I mentioned before, the wood, along with all of the other decorations, have now been removed. So I have a few questions... #1 how do I go about doing this massive switch from a tropical fish tank to a goldfish setup? #2 should I do a few water change cycles before adding goldfish, also to help clear up the tea like tint in the water? #3 must I change all of the filter media and clean out the insides of the filter? #4 must I wipe down the glass? #5 can my corydoras live with the goldfish that I will be getting in the near future? #6 do my corydoras need a heater to survive or will they be fine in room temperature water along with the goldfish?

1# make sure everything is good for goldfish, reashearch A LOT about them\
#2 probably do a normal (25-50) WC before adding, test the water, make sure the params are good.

BTW, You can only do 2 goldfish in a 29 gallon. And with that, you should probably do 50% 1x or 2x a week. Also, I'm no expert, so probably wait till you get a few more repiles. Also, Welcome!

Drift wood often realese tannins, it is harmless, even good for some fish. If you dont like it, soak the drift wood possibly in boilng water, changing the water every other day or so, untill water added to a buck with the wood remains clear. You can make extra water changes to remove the tannins in your tank, It id safer to just leave it to dissapate with regular water changes.

You do not need to do too much extra cleaning to introduce goldfish, In fact some bacteria is good. You NEED to leave the filter alone!. You DO NOT want to remove too much bio bacteria and lose your cycle.

What kind of cories do you have? some of them need different temps then others. What kind of pleco? some of them require that driftwood you removed to rasp on. Some require different temps. Pleco and goldfish are not generally recomended tankmates. Pleco will likely eventually notice that the slime coating on the goldfish tastes good. And thats bad for the goldfish.

Lastly, goldfish are social, you need to keep at least 2, but you have a bare minimum size for 2 small goldfish, adding a school or cories and a pleco is going to create a hard to maintain overstocked tank. Do you have room for a larger tank? any 48 inch tank would be best.

The best thing to do would be pulling out the heater, do a regular water change and move the goldfish in once it cools down. Don't touch the filter media or scrub anything down. Remove the wood if you don't like brown water, it will clear up after a few regular water changes. You have a lot of good bacteria built up and you don't want to disturb it.

I don't think it is good to have plecos with goldfish. They can suck the slime coat off them. I don't know about the coryedora but would guess they need warm water.

Do not keep Cory’s with goldfish they will get stuck in the mouth of the goldfish. Plecos are a no too, one bit my goldfish. Check last thread. The combination of the two is risky.
