Hi,
I am interested to remove my 3d background in my discus tank and paint the outside of the glass on the background.
what paint is safe and can I do it in an established tank with fish in it? I mean will the paint fumes effect the fish until it dries up?
I want to be able to remove the paint if I change mind or relocate the aquarium in future
thanks

You could roll on a latex paint, these days they are low VOC, turn off any air pumps that maybe running.

I used a water based paint they sell at any store for crafts. I got mine at Walmart and got a big bottle for my 36 gallon bow front and put on one coat, let it dry then did another two coats and it came out great! I also like the fact that if I want to change the color it washes right off. I used a sponge that has a stick on it and did long strokes, those I got in the paint section. Here is my tank.

When I did my tank it took a can of spray paint for full coverage.

Head to your local craft store or wal mart and look for Createx it's a water based air brush paint.. No fumes and washes off with soapy water. Comes in all kinds of colors too

When I was young and had a tank I took aluminum foil cut 30% larger than the tank and, with gloss paint, painted red, yellow, green and brown sort of plant like vertical streaks. Didn't worry about fumes as was painted in another room - any gloss paint that would stick to the shiny side of the foil
Crumpled the foil and opened it up to tank size. Made a nice 3-D background.
While I'm thinking about it, maybe I'll do it again!
Try it.

Black spray-on plasti-dip.

Works great and can peel off when you want to change pretty easily. Do several light coats rather than fewer thick coats.
