Aquarium Hood With Lights

Hello again,

as some of you may know, I am planning on starting a new tank. I have a glass aquarium of 30" x 12 1/4 (those are external measurements). But, I don't have any kind of hood (nor lights).

I'm looking on Internet to know what to buy. Most of the hoods are of dimensions 30x12. But I was wondering if they could fit and how I could know it?

Also,do I have to pay attention on the way my tank's edges are? I mean, there is no type of edging at all, it's only the end of the glass. So, is any hood going to work?

Finally, is it better to only buy a lighting rack? I will look further on Internet to know what kind of power of lighting I need.

I really feel like I am just thinking out loud (and that I am not very clear because of the language), but you really help me see things better.

When I got my light I bought a LED light that were the dimensions of my tank. The only difference is that they have these tiny extendable stand that sits on the side of the tank. That might help you.

What are you looking for? A light to display fish or something that will grow plants?

Thank you Fashooga!

dcutl002 : I'm looking for something that will grow plants. Not sure which ones yet but something to please my futurs neon tetra, corys and shrimps (maybe later cherry barbs and gouramis).

In my opinion, it is best to start out with Low Light plants. I have a Finnex Stingray on a Low Tech tank and it does a great job. If interested, look on Amazon for the price on a 30" fixture.

For the top, you can get a glass top, build your own screen top out of 1/4" mesh and a screen frame, or go topless.

I will keep your advice in mind for the Low Ligth plants and I'm thinking of trying to build a DIY top with LED strips (with full spectrum LED light).

For the plants, I'm thinking about :
-Dwarf Sagittaria and Straight Vallisneria in the back (where the lights will be);
-Anubias BarterI in the middle;
-Java fern on the side;
-and Crystalwort on the surface (it's the one I am the least sure about);
All those plants with a black substrates.

I want to keep a free space in front of the aquarium with sand (and 2 or 3 moss balls) for the corys and the tetras to swim.

Does it seem ok?

If you have a rimless tank you could do a screen top like I'm doing:

Clips here
Screen top here

As far as lighting and mounting I just did this for my new 10 gallon but there are many sizes:

Just a few ideas to get you started.
