Aquarium Filter Gallons Per Hour Filtration

This is just a helpful thread for finding the gallons per hour (gph) filtration of different filters.

For hang on back (HOB) filters, recommended filtration is 8-10x tank volume an hour. I.e. 20 gallon tank=160-200gph

For canister filters, recommended filtration is 5x or more tank volume an hour. I.e. 20 gallon tank-100 or more gph

Feel free to add gph of your filters to this. If we all work together, we can create an excellent reference tool for finding gph of different filters, which will help all of us. Also, if any information is incorrect, please feel free to correct it. I searched these gph's online. I'm hoping when we get enough information, I can set up a spreadsheet for ease of use.

Great thread guys.

A couple of additions/corrections on the Aqua-Tech and Aqueon models.....

Aqua-Tech 5-15: 100 gph
Aqua-Tech 10-20: 120 gph

Aqueon 20: 125 gph
Aqueon 30: 200 gph

I'll also add:

ViaAqua Vitalife 200 HOB: 190 gph
ViaAqua Vitalife 100 HOB: 100 gph

Fluval U-Series internal filters (U1 offers sponge only ... other models offer dual sponges and dual poly/carbon inserts, and they also include a rectangular plastic container cartridge which houses biomax. Sponges in all are same material as AquaClear sponges.) U2, U3, and U4, also have a 3-way water flow adjustment knob (top, bottom, center spray bar).

U1: 65 gph
U2: 105 gph
U3: 155 gph
U4: 260 gph

I like the Aqua-Tech's. They've usually been quiet, fairly reliable, and perform well. I usually make my own media for them. They're essentially the 'old' Penguins minus the biowheel ... and as many know, they're made by Marineland. In fact, the 'right size' cartridges used in the newer Penguins also fit the Aqua-Tech's of similar size/gph.

I also love AquaClear and like Aqueon and the old-style Whispers.

Here's the breakdown for the Aqua-Tech's by model:

5-15: 100 GPH
10-20: 120 GPH
20-40: 160 GPH
30-60: 330 GPH

I know over here fluval have just released the fluval g3 and g6
I don't know the gph but iirc one is for up to 300l tanks and the g6 for up to 600l tanks

For aquariums up to 80 Gallons
Pump output 340 GPH
Filter circulation: 185 GPH
Comes complete with a Mechanical Pre-Filter Cartridge, a Chemical Filter (Carbon) Cartridge and G-Nodes Biological Filtration Media. You may also be interested in purchasing alternative and additional filter media.

that's the spec for the g3 and this is the spec for the g6

fluval G6 is rated for 160 gallons (600 liters) with a maximum flowrate of 264 gph

Attached is a spreadsheet listing many types of filters, their gallons per hour, and their liters per hour.

It's recommended for hang on the back (HOB) filters, to have 8-10 times the volume of the tank per hour. I.e. 20 gallon tank=160-200gph.

For canister filters, it's recommended to have 5 times the volume of the tank per hour. I.e., 20 gallon tank=100gph

Hopefully this will be a useful thread for many members in setting up new tanks with proper filtration.

I would like to thank the following members for contributing information to make this happen:

There wouldn't be nearly as much information if it wasn't for all of you.

Anyone who would like to contribute any filtration information, feel free to post to this thread:

New information will be added to the spreadsheet and the original thread.

EDIT December 2018; a new version of the spreadsheet has been added below. See post #3 (Thanks Cichlidude!)

Here is an updated version of the Aquarium Filter GPH with corrections and added filters.

You must RENAME this file and drop the .pdf extension so it just has the .xls extension after downloading.

Talking with the forum admin this forum does not allow .xls spreadsheets as the software thinks it may have macros which cause issues. There are no macros in this or the original spreadsheet but he gave permission for the above.

Download to your computer and SAVE the file and remove the .pdf extension. It should list as:

Fishlore Filtration Spreadsheet-Rev 2.xls.pdf (rename and remove .pdf)

to

Fishlore Filtration Spreadsheet-Rev 2.xls

Enjoy
