Aquaponics

Hi! I'm new here!
Just recently got into the fish keeping. Started with my daughter who really wanted her own pet over the summer. Worked out really well, and she really loves Dory, her blue betta. I'm also a science teacher, and Dory inspired me to look into aquaponic aquariums. I just started the research and development portion of this project with my 5th grade science class. We have a 55 gallon tank just sitting in storage, and we really want to put it to good use. Any tips on aquaponics would be greatly appreciated!

By aquaponics, you mean a extra filtration system with lost of plants, or the only filter would be the plants?

Preferably only the plants would be the filter. We're trying to make it as self sustaining as we can. But if that puts the fish or plants in danger, we can add a filtration system.

I would add a filtration system along with the aquaponics system.

A school of fish like neon tetras might be a good idea, except for the health issues. Cardinal tetras might be better. 6 or more is what I recommend. You will need water movement.
