AquaClear Or Aqueon

I'm getting new updated equipment for when I set up the 55 gallon tank. Do you think I should get the Aqueon 55/75 Quiet Flow Filter or the Hagen Aqua Clear Power Filter 110 Gallons. I'm leaning towards Aqua Clear now because of its multiple biological stage filtration. Also I heard its almost like a minI canister filter

I only have the aquaclear. No complaints here, better than some other ones with the versatility and whatnot

If you have periodic power outages go with the AQUEON; it self primes, Otherwise go AC. Either way you can't lose.
PS: for a 55 gallon, I would go with either two AC 70s or two AQUEON 50s.

I agree with everyone, aquaclear. Quiet and totally customizable media

I think I'm going to go with the Aquaclear. I'm really liking the multiple stage biological filtration and everyone seems to like it as I can see, it looks fairly simple to maintain too from what I saw on Youtube on peoples reviews videos. Thank You all for the information. It was greatly appreciated

LOL I just realized I actually do have an aqueon, but I couldn't remember at the time. Anyways, I would still go aquaclear, I like mine over the aqueon alot.
On my aqueon HOB the intake pipe always falls off when I turn off the filter for a waterchange or something, which I don't know if it's supposed to happen but unless the filter is on there's no way to get that pipe to stay on.

My aquaclear is better, it has an adjustable flow too, although I always keep it on max to get the best filtration.

Yes to AquaClear. Best for customization for crystal clear polished water. For best results, use 100 micron non-woven filter pads + Seachem Purigen + floss in the "middle" in lieu of carbon.

Both the Fluval C series and the AquaClear (made by Fluval) maintain the same filtration rate regardless of flow. In other words, on an AquaClear 70, even when you cut a 300 GPH flow down to 100 GPH, it still filters ...... and refilters ... the water at a 300 GPH rate.

I think you are mistaken. How can that be? it defies the laws of physics!!!!!!

Why don't you take it up with Hagen/Fluval ????????

PATENTED REFILTRATION SYSTEM
For a healthy aquarium and clear water
Sometimes delicate fish and plants require a gentler water flow. The patented AquaClear®
refiltration system allows you to control the flow rate without compromising filtration
efficiency. When the flow rate is reduced, up to 50% of the water within the filter chamber is
processed multiple times. More impurities are filtered out, creating a healthier tank with
sparkling clean and clear water.

Hmm, doesn't mean it filters as much, but instead filters better

I have a bunch of aqueon filters. I have two 55/75s on my 55 gal, 3 20s and a 50 on other tanks.I love them.

Ah I see, it just re-filters the water in there that's being blocked, but that part with "More impurities are filtered out," I don't worry about too much, I'd rather have more water being filtered than the same water being filtered twice.

I would definitely go with Aqua Clear. They not only do a great job, but seem to last forever. I'm currently using two 500s and a bunch of smaller Aqua Clears, the youngest of which must be at least twenty years old., where some of my younger, though less expensive, Aqueons, are now landfill.
As well, my old Aqua Clears seem to work about as well as new Aqua Clears that I've since bought.--rick

I have filters from both of these brands and I like both of them for different reasons. For a large display tank though I tend to lean towards Aquaclear my mom had one she gave me that was 8 years old and still going like the energizer bunny (I only had to replace the impeller) it still works but I sold it when I sold my 55g.

Now I have an Aquaclear 50 on my grandmother's 27g cube and my 34g. I really like the fact that the filtration is customizable.

I like the Aqueon which I have on my QT tank (may get one for my new guppy tank) because it sets up really quickly and self primes.

I have had BOTH aquaclears and aqueons and I have to say hands down with the Aqueon.

My reason is simple - I did not like the fact that the aquaclear does not self-prime. A few times when the power went out, all of the water emptied back in to the tank and the motor was left spinning for at least an hour before I found it ( it was burning hot and probably ready to explode )
This happened more than once on 2 different ones.

My Aqueon ( currently have the 30 AND 55/75 ) running in my 36 gallon. NO problems self priming and it starts back up instantly when the water level is below the pump.
I am more comfortable leaving for extended periods of time knowing if my power goes out, it will restart.
Currently I have ALL of the media that WAS in the aquaclear in the 55/75 with no problem and even room to spare for another media pad.

Hey everyone, I got the 55 gallon with all the supplies and it is up and running! I chose the Aquaclear 110 and it works amazing!!! The air pump I got was the Tetra Air Whisper 60 And the heater was 150 watt Aqueon. I'm happy I chose the 110 because my parrot cichlid poops a lot. And its giant poop lol. But I can't have many decorations or plants in the tank because they get massive especially my Common Pleco.

Good selection on the 110. Won't go wrong with that choice.
A little trick before you do your water changes. On my 110's (currently have 3), after turning off the power to the filter, I will pop the tube to break the suction. Then I will start draining the tank without losing any water in the filter.
This will reduce having to refill/prime the filter after your water change. Also it makes sure your media is kept wet (depending on how long your water change takes). You might be surprised how much water the 110 holds, enough to drop the tank water level by 1/2 inch or more!

good choice on the AC, they are great filters and I have never had an issue from any of my AC's.

The only problems I every seen on an AC is that when the sponge gets clogged, the whole caddy thing pops out(making water spill out), and sometimes impeller problems

Besides thoughs, ACs are pretty good

For my 16 gallon bow front I have a quietflow 10 on it and that is what it came with... I'm thinking about getting a more powerful filter for when the tank is set up again and I'm leaning towards aquaclear... the opening width on the tank is about 8.5 inches maybe bigger for the filter What one should I get.. The quiet flow seemed to be much too week for the 16 gallon considering its height.

Between those two options I would look at the Aquaclear 50. It's rated for up to a 50 gallon, so it should be more than adequate for your tank, even with it being taller. It needs 7" along the tank opening according to the website below, so you should be in good shape. I have two AC110's on larger tanks and love them. It can readily be found online for under $40. Best of luck!

Also the aquaclear50 has an extension on the intake tube so it can reach even lower if you need it

I have to agree, AquaClear is my personal preference, they've worked really well for me, none of the other filters I've used even compare. I love them.

I prefer AC filters over most HOB filters. I've always had a great experience with AC filters, never gave me any problems in the past; However, I've had multiple issues with Aqueon in the past.

One thing I love about AC filters is that it has flow control (in case the the current is too strong for your fish). I've recently found out it's better to reduce the flow because the water in the large filter chamber stays in contact with the filter media for longer periods of time, allowing the beneficial bacteria to have more time to remove ammonia and nitrites from the water within it. Reducing the flow shouldn't affect your tank, nor the output of the overall filter.
