In my AC filters I use Seachem Purigen instead of carbon. Works great.

Do you buy it already in the bag or do you get it loose and put it in your own bag?

I’ve done both, you just have to make sure to get a bag that will hold the Purigen. You can use pantyhose if you go with a loose bottle. The beads are so small they’ll go through a lot of filter bags.

Yeah that’s my only concern. I probably would get it in the bag Seachem sells it in.

I meant to ask you.. how long does carbon typically last for before it stops working?

Did you make sure it was primed, was there water in the filter?

I hear that you're supposed to replace it 4-6 weeks or so. I would just remove the carbon and replace it with some cheap filter floss and replace them every month or so. Or alternatively, use purigen instead.
